Teachers’ Perceptions of the Pedagogical Challenges of State Language Instruction to Hungarian Minority Students in Slovakia
This study investigates the pedagogical landscape of state language instruction in Hungarian-medium schools in Slovakia. Situated within the wider context of European minority language policies, this study explores the institutional ecosystems, didactic approaches and teaching strategies, and the relationship between teacher- and student-centered methodologies in state language instruction. A questionnaire survey based on a self-developed Multi-L…
Social complexity without Inequality
Ruminant fats dominated LBK pottery (66%) over non-ruminant (27%) and dairy (7%). • Lipid concentrations can reflect processing intensity, not unequal resource access. • Statistics show no link between house size and food resource distribution. • Household vessel specialization occurred alongside equal access to food. • LBK households show functional, not hierarchical, social organization. Understanding how early farming societies developed socia…
New approaches reviving old findings
Neolithic anthropomorphic figurines, usually manufactured from ceramics, were found in large quantities at many sites. Despite past efforts to interpret their meaning, research has been stagnating for two main reasons. First, figurines have been considered artefacts of high heritage value and, therefore, they are usually not allowed to be analysed using invasive methods, which would be the most effective in ceramic research, allowing for identify…

Migration Period in Central Europe
The Migration Period (4 th –5 th centuries AD) in Central Europe was marked by profound demographic and cultural transformations. Nevertheless, bioarchaeological data from this period remain scarce across the region. Tyniec upon Ślęża constitutes the only newly excavated Migration Period cemetery in southern Poland, providing a rare opportunity to explore lifeways during this transformative epoch. Stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope …
Funerary Practices Among Central European First Farmers in the Light of New Radiocarbon Dates
This paper examines the temporal dynamics of Linearbandkeramik (LBK) mortuary practices in south-eastern Czechia and western Slovakia, focusing on the emergence and development of funerary traditions. New radiocarbon dating of Moravian sites, including Vedrovice (with the large cemetery Široká u lesa , the settlement graves at Sídliště, and the small cluster of burials at Za dvorem ), Brno-Starý/Nový Lískovec , Těšetice-Kyjovice-Sutny , as well a…
The impact of public debt on economic growth
This paper investigates the relationship between public debt and economic growth in selected advanced economies and European Union member states over the period 2000–2022. Using a linear panel regression model, the study analyzes the impact of public debt on GDP growth, while accounting for additional macroeconomic factors such as inflation, unemployment, and gross fixed capital formation. The findings reveal a negative linear relationship betwee…
Life Satisfaction and Inequality in Slovakia
In recent years, a small number of studies have emphasized that subjective well-being of individuals depends not only on income but also consumption and wealth. However, only a few have examined the influence of all three variables simultaneously. Empirical studies have also analyzed the role of self-centered and community-centered inequalities but the inclusion of both measures in the same specification is scarce. In a departure from much of the…

Welfare regimes of European countries and their development in the context of membership in the European Union
Welfare regimes represent potential approaches to the implementation of redistributive policies worldwide. In European countries, several significant regimes have been identified, including the Conservative, Southern, Social Democratic, Liberal model, the Post-Communist European model, and the Model of the Former USSR. The present study focused on identifying the welfare regimes of EU members and candidate countries and examining whether shifts b…
Patrilocality at the Beginning of Farming? An Isotopic Approach from SE Moravia
This research combines Strontium ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) and Oxygen ( δ 18 O) isotope analysis to challenge the prevailing interpretation of patrilocal exogamic practices among eastern European Early Neolithic Linearbandkeramik (LBK) communities. Patrilocality has been considered the key factor influencing the mobility patterns of central Europe’s first farmers (c. 5500–4900 cal. BC), especially in the south-eastern Moravian region (Czech Republic). Focu…

Great Doxology with Miaphysite Trisagion
The article contains the edition and study of three ostraca in the British Library (Ostracon 5878) which join with another fragment in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (P.Mon.Epiph. 607). The join of these pieces helps to date the British Library fragments to the turn of the 6th-7th centuries and assign them to Apa Moses from the Monastery of Epiphanius in Thebes. The ostracon now provides a complete and unique text of the Great Doxology as used…
The Impact of Gender Inequality on GDP in EU Countries
In recent years, gender inequality has been considered the main characteristic of insufficient gross domestic product (GDP) growth. This paper discusses the evolution of GDP per capita in 21 countries of the European Union between 2015 and 2019. Using panel regression, we investigated the change in GDP per capita through five variables. The analysis results showed that female employment rate is the most statistically significant and positive vari…
Radiocarbon Dating of Grass-Tempered Ceramic Reveals the Earliest Pottery From Slovakia Predates the Arrival of Farming
In the absence of wood, bone, and other organics, one possible candidate for determining the age of a site is the radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of pottery. In central Europe during the Early Neolithic, pottery was ubiquitous and contained substantial quantities of organic temper. However, attempts at the direct dating of organic inclusions raises a lot of methodological issues, especially when several sources of carbon contribute to the resulting ra…
Incorporating Survey Perceptions of Public Safety and Security Variables in Crime Rate Analyses for the Visegrád Group (V4) Countries of Central Europe
Public governance has evolved in terms of safety and security management, incorporating digital innovation and smart-analytics-based tools to visualize abundant data collections. Urban safety and security are vital social problems that have many branches to be solved, simplified, and improved. Currently, we can see that data-driven insights have often been incorporated into planning, forecasting, and fighting such challenges. The literature has e…

Environmental health is among the priority areas of public health, and the current professional communities are intensively engaged with it. The main objective of the study is to quantify regional disparities of preventable mortality in Slovakia and to study the extent of the influence of selected environmental factors on changes in the development of its values. A cross-sectional linear regression model is used to quantify effects of environment…
Mobility of nomads in Central Asia
In this study we report the first 87Sr/86Sr isotopic data and mobility analyses of the Pazyryk culture in Central Asia. Throughout prehistory the Altai Mountains represent a unique cultural frontier characterised by a perpetual state of transition, resulting from highly mobile nomadic inhabitants. We analysed human skeletal remains from barrows in the Manzherok region of the Altai Republic, Russian Federation. The analysis was based on 160 measur…
The impact of healthcare availability on the amenable mortality
This study aims to provide information on the relationship between the accessibility of healthcare and avoidable mortality. Many of the general indicators such as health care expenditures, mortality, life expectancy are insufficient in comparing the national healthcare systems, because they explain only a small amount of diversity caused by socio-economic factors. The study is based on the panel data analysis for the period from 1998 to 2015 in S…

Early occurrence of temperate oak-dominated forest in the northern part of the Little Hungarian Plain, SW Slovakia
Using a multi-proxy analysis of a postglacial sedimentary sequence from a lowland wetland, we address the possible drivers of change in the wetland habitats and surrounding landscapes of southwestern Slovakia. A 5 m-deep core in the Parížske močiare marshes was investigated for pollen, plant macro-remains, molluscs, organic content and magnetic susceptibility. The palaeoecological record extends from the Pleistocene–Holocene transition (≥11,200 c…

Adaptation of settlement strategies to environmental conditions in southern Slovakia in the Neolithic and Eneolithic
Environmental conditions such as climate, topography, and soil conditions had an impact on prehistoric settlement strategies. By studying changes in settlement structure in the Nitra, Hron and Ipel’ valleys in southern Slovakia over the course of the Neolithic and Eneolithic, preferences for various climatic and topographic environments in different periods can be seen. Besides cultural and socio-economic factors, it can also be expected that cha…
