Complex Cardinal Numerals and the Strong Minimalist Thesis
Different analyses of complex cardinal numerals have been proposed in Generative Grammar. This article provides an analysis of these expressions based on the Strong Minimalist Thesis, according to which the derivations of linguistic expressions are generated by a simple combinatorial operation, applying in accord with principles external to the language faculty. The proposed derivations account for the asymmetrical structure of additive and multi…
Deriving coordinate nouns with Merge and Principles of efficient computation
We analyze coordinate nouns in English and derive their properties from Merge and Principles of efficient computation. The proposed analysis relies on extended projections for the coordinate conjunction and provides derivations to the interfaces with consequences for the externalization of the coordinator and the semantic interpretation of the coordinate nouns. The proposed analysis challenges associative theories of learning. It also challenges …
Time-counting expressions as aspectual complex numerals
We compare the syntactic and semantic properties of time-counting expressions to those of better studied counting systems, such as complex cardinal numerals (Kayne 2005, 2016; Ionin & Matushansky 2006; Stavrou & Terzi 2008; Di Sciullo 2012, 2015, a.o.). From a typological point of view, we will focus on Romance languages. We argue that time-counting expressions, as opposed to complex numerical expressions, may have specific aspectual properties. …
Asymmetry and the Language Faculty
In Syntactic Structures, Chomsky argues for the autonomy of syntax with respect to semantics on the one hand, and phonology on the other. In this paper, we argue that the autonomy of syntax is further supported by the derivation of sometime unpronounced functional categories. We propose an analysis of the pronunciation/silence of coordinate conjunction and prepositions in additive cardinal numerals and time counting expressions. We provide indepe…
Biolinguistics and the human language faculty
In recent years linguists have gained new insight into human language capacities on the basis of results from linguistics and biology. The so-called biolinguistic enterprise aims to fill in the explanatory gap between language and biology, on both theoretical and experimental grounds, hoping to reach a deeper understanding of language as a phenomenon rooted in biology. This research program is taking its first steps, and it has already given rise…
The Definite Determiner in Romanian
We present a new biolinguistic explanation for the evolution of the Nom/Acc and Gen/Dat forms of the Romanian definite determiner, thus providing further evidence to the hypothesis that the Directional Asymmetry Principle provides an explanation for the variation and evolution of the order of head-dependent constituents. As predicted, the choice between a valued and an unvalued variant of a functional feature, which was available in Old Romanian,…
Introduction
The articles assembled in this issue of the Canadian Journal of Linguistics/Revue canadienne de linguistique contribute to our understanding of the role of asymmetric relations at the interfaces. Asymmetric relations have privileged status in the syntactic, phonological, and morphological derivation of linguistic expressions (see for example the articles in Di Sciullo 2003). Interfaces are representations that must meet legibility conditions impo…
Movement Chains at the Interfaces
We argue that Agree is an asymmetric relation. According to Asymmetric Agree, if x Agrees with y , then the features of y must be properly included in the features of x . If the links of a chain created by movement are related by Agree, this correctly predicts the properties of syntactic movement chains. And if the links of a chain created by movement are subject to the Proper Inclusion Condition, that accounts for the (un)availability of extract…
The Delay of Principle B Effect (DPBE) and its Absence in Some Languages
The Delay of Principle B Effect (DPBE) has been discussed in various studies that show that children around age 5 seem to violate Principle B of Binding Theory (Chomsky, 1981, and related works), when the antecedent of the pronoun is a name, but not when the antecedent is a quantifier. The analysis we propose can explain the DPBE in languages of the Dutch-English type, and its exemption in languages with (dis)placed pronouns (clitics). In both ty…
On Morphological compositionality
Neste artigo, argumentamos que as propriedades dos pronomesindefinidos como os quantificadores, someone e everything, por exemplo, são derivadas pelas operações da gramática e sãointerpretadas composicionalmente na interface semântica. Nãoé essa a visão assumida geralmente na prática corrente, já quenela os pronomes indefinidos são frequentemente tomadoscomo expressões semanticamente não decomponíveis(KARTTUNNEN, 1976; MONTAGUE, 1974; GOENENDIJK;S…
Affixes at the Edge
This article shows how affixal scope and precedence relations fall out in a natural way from properties of the computational system. Using Asymmetry Theory (Di Sciullo 2005), it is proposed that: (i) roots and affixes form minimal trees; (ii) minimal trees compose with each other to form morphological phases; (iii) features of a morphological phase edge that are legible at Phonetic Form (PF) determine affix-root linearization; and (iv) ordering o…
Asymmetry in Grammar
Asymmetry in Grammar: Syntax and Semantics brings to fore the centrality of asymmetry in DP, VP and CP. A finer grained articulation of the DP is proposed, and further functional projections for restrictive relatives, as well as a refined analyses of case identification and presumptive pronouns. The papers on VP discuss further asymmetries among arguments, and between arguments and adjuncts. Double-object constructions, specificational copula sen…
