  • Negative symptoms and self-reflection increase alienation in individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis

Open Access•Melina Mendonça, Natalia Mansur Haddad et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Our data highlights the importance of identifying pronounced negative symptoms in CHR individuals as a reinforcer of internalized stigma. In this sense, addressing stigma in CHR should carefully consider negative symptoms, given their influence on alienation both directly and indirectly via self-reflection

  • Body image as a mediator in the relationship between psychotic experiences and later disordered eating

Open Access•Feten Fekih‐Romdhane, Lilia Houissa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2024

BACKGROUND: The relationship between psychosis and disordered eating remains a challenging area of research to which little interest was paid. Using longitudinal data, we aimed to explore the hypothesis that the pathways from psychotic experiences (PEs) to disordered eating (DE) and body-mass index (BMI) are mediated by body-image disturbances. METHODS: = 510, 61.2% females, mean age of 16.05 ± 1.01 years) were asked to complete three scheduled a…

  • ChatGPT is not ready yet for use in providing mental health assessment and interventions

    Open Access•Ismail Dergaa, Feten Fekih‐Romdhane et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

As for July 2023, ChatGPT failed to give the simple medical advice given certain clinical scenarios. This supports that the quality of ChatGPT-generated content is still far from being a guide for users and professionals to provide accurate mental health information. It remains, therefore, premature to conclude on the usefulness and safety of ChatGPT in mental health practice

  • Suicide literacy mediates the path from religiosity to suicide stigma among Muslim community adults

    Open Access•Feten Fekih‐Romdhane, Suhad Daher-Nashif et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2023

BACKGROUND: The majority of research attention has been devoted to the link between religiosity and suicide risk, and a considerable amount of studies has been carried out on how stigma impacts individuals with mental health problems of different kinds. However, the interplay between religiosity, suicide literacy and suicide stigma has seldom been empirically researched, especially quantitatively. We sought through this study to redress the imbal…

  • Problematic Smartphone Use Mediates the Pathway from Suicidal Ideation to Positive Psychotic Experiences

Open Access•Feten Fekih‐Romdhane, Diana Malaeb et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Mental…•2023

  • Insomnia Mediates the Relationship Between Aggression Indicators and Positive Psychotic Experiences in a Large Community-Based Adult Sample

Open Access•Feten Fekih‐Romdhane, Diana Malaeb et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Mental…•2023

  • Mental illness stigma as a moderator in the relationship between religiosity and help-seeking attitudes among Muslims from 16 Arab countries

    Open Access•Feten Fekih‐Romdhane, Suhad Daher-Nashif et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our findings preliminarily suggest that mental illness stigma is a modifiable individual factor that seems to strengthen the direct positive effect of religiosity on help-seeking attitudes. This provides potential insights on possible anti-stigma interventions that might help overcome reluctance to counseling in highly religious Arab Muslim communities

  • Addressing Mood Disorder Diagnosis' Stigma With an Honest, Open, Proud (HOP)-Based Intervention

Open Access•Arlete Modelli, Viviane Piagentini Candal Setti et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Introduction: The public stigma and self-stigma contribute to the dilemma of disclosing or not one's own mental illness diagnosis. Studies suggest that revealing it diminishes stress, besides helping with self-esteem. Honest, Open, Proud (HOP) is a group program that aids in the process of deciding on it, reducing its impact. Considering the relevance of this issue, the present study aimed to apply a HOP-based intervention in a group of patients …

  • Childhood maltreatment in individuals at risk of psychosis

Open Access•Elder Lanzani Freitas, Alexandre A Loch et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2020

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is a known risk factor for the development of mental disorders, such as psychotic symptoms. An extensive body of literature about childhood maltreatment and mental health has been developed in wealthy countries, but information about this connection is lacking in developing countries. AIMS: To explore a possible relationship between childhood maltreatment and ultra-high risk of psychosis in a non-help-seeking po…

  • Disclosing the diagnosis of schizophrenia

Open Access•Viviane Piagentini Candal Setti, Alexandre A Loch et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2019

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is one of the most stigmatized psychiatric disorders, and disclosing it is often a source of stress to individuals with the disorder. The Coming Out Proud (COP) group intervention is designed to reduce the stigma's negative impact and help participants decide if they want to disclose their disorder. AIMS: To assess the effect of the COP intervention in individuals with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. METHODS: A pilot stu…

    Open Access•Alexandre A Loch, Yuan-Pang Wang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2014

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to assess stigma toward schizophrenia in a representative sample of the Brazilian general population. METHODS: The sample consisted of 1015 individuals interviewed by telephone. A vignette describing someone with schizophrenia was read, and four stigma aspects regarding this hypothetical individual were assessed: stereotypes, restrictions, perceived prejudice and social distance. Latent profile analysis searched for sti…
