Constraints on Reciprocal Scope
We explore constraints on reciprocal scope, showing that properties of the local antecedent of the reciprocal are crucial in determining the scope of the reciprocal. We survey bound and non-bound, collective, controlled and distributive antecedents, examining and rejecting or refining some previously proposed constraints on reciprocal scope. We also discuss logophoric antecedents, which to our knowledge have not figured in the literature up to no…
Reciprocity
We present a relational analysis of reciprocity in the setting of Partial Plural Compositional Discourse Representation Theory (abbreviated as PPCDRT), combining ideas from Plural Compositional DRT and Partial Compositional DRT. Our analysis accounts for a wide range of data that are problematic for proposals involving quantification over individuals and for relational analyses relying on cumulative operators on predicates. We also provide an acc…

Objects and Information Structure
In many languages, the objects of transitive verbs are either marked by grammatical case or agreement on the verb, or they remain unmarked: this is differential object marking. This book is a cross-linguistic study of how differential object marking is affected by information structure, the structuring of the utterance in accordance with the informational value of its elements and contextual factors. Marked objects tend to be associated with old …
Plural Semantics, Reduplication, and Numeral Modification in Indonesian
Patterns of plural marking and numeral modification in Indonesian provide an interesting test bed for theories of the semantics of numeral classifiers and plurality. Cross-linguistically, the presence of numeral classifiers in a language is strongly connected with the absence or optionality of plural marking; this generalization is the basis of Chierchia's (1998a, 1998b) nominal mapping parameter and also accords with established typological gene…
Indeterminacy by underspecification
We examine the formal encoding of feature indeterminacy, focussing on case indeterminacy as an exemplar of the phenomenon. Forms that are indeterminately specified for the value of a feature can simultaneously satisfy conflicting requirements on that feature and thus are a challenge to constraint-based formalisms which model the compatibility of information carried by linguistic items by combining or integrating that information. Much previous wo…
Syntax of Natural and Accidental Coordination
Adjective agreement with coordinated nouns in Finnish presents a puzzling pattern: in some cases, a plural adjective is required with coordinated singular nouns, while in other cases that seemto be syntactically identical, a plural adjective is disallowed. The key to this puzzle lies at the syntax-semantics interface: plural adjectives are required in cases of NATURAL COORDINATION, where a salient close relation holds between the conjuncts, but d…
Determiner agreement and noun conjunction
Determiner-noun agreement in English and many other languages appears to be straightforwardly describable; singular determiners go with singular nouns, and plural determiners go with plural nouns. The situation is more complicated with coordinated nouns, however, since unexpected agreement patterns often result. Our theory makes the correct predictions for English and other languages by combining two crucial insights: the dual nature of agreement…
Lexical Functional Grammar
Volume 34 of Syntax and Semantics is a thorough and accessible overview and introduction to Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG), a theory of the content and representation of different aspects of linguistic structure and the relations that hold between them. The book motivates and describes the two syntactic structures of LFG: surface phrasal organization is represented by a context-free phrase structure tree, and more abstract functional syntactic …
Feature Indeterminacy and Feature Resolution
Syntactic features like case, person, and gender are often assumed to have simple atomic values that are checked for consistency by the standard predicate of equality. The case feature has values such as nom or acc, and values like masc and fem are assumed for the feature gender. But such a view does not square with some of the complex behavior these features exhibit. It allows no obvious account of feature indeterminacy (how a particular form ca…

Les verbes causatifs « polymorphiques »
A. Zaenen & M. Dalrymple : The syntactic analysis of French causative constructions relies on the distinction, crucial in the LFG formalism, between the constituent structure (hierarchical : faire takes a VP complement) and the functional structure (flat : faire and the infinitival V form a complex predicate in a unique functional structure). The semantic representation is constructed from the f-structure, lexical semantic information (which spec…
