  • Socioeconomic and cultural correlates of illicit alcohol consumption among patrons in Uganda

Open Access•Kennedy Niwagaba, Simon Peter Rwakahangi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

With over 6.5 million Ugandans, more than half of all the estimated alcohol consumers relying on illicit alcohol, the magnitude of this challenge extends beyond individual health outcomes to national economic losses, weakened public institutions, and deteriorating social capital. To examine the socioeconomic and cultural correlates of illicit alcohol use in rural and urban areas of Uganda. The study employed a cross-sectional study design. Alcoho…

  • Who leaves school prematurely in Uganda

Open Access•Christian Kakuba, Olivia Nankinga et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•Referencias: 1

This paper examined the predictors for school dropouts in Uganda following the introduction of universal primary education close to 30 years ago. We used 10 % of the 2014 Uganda Population and Housing Census dataset (albeit relatively old) to examine the predictors of school dropouts in; i) Rural Uganda ii) Kampala (the capital) and iii) other urban areas. We specifically applied the logistic regression model to predict the probability that a chi…

  • Access to Boarding Secondary Schools in Uganda

Open Access•Christian Kakuba, Marc Pilon•ARTICLE•Cahiers de la recherche sur l…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

In 2007, Uganda became one of the first countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to implement universal secondary education. This increased access, but in 2010, 70% of secondary schools were privately owned and 41% of public schools were boarding schools. Boarding schools have a good reputation in Uganda for academic performance compared with day schools. We used Uganda National Household Survey data for 2005/2006 and 2009/2010 to measure inequalities and…
