    Malcolm Caldwell was assassinated in Phnom Penh on December 23, 1978, where he was a member of the first team of Western journalists to visit Kampuchea since its liberation in 1975. His death was tragically linked to the contradictions of socialist revolution in Southeast Asia; he was caught in the contradictory cross-fire of the very changes for which he had struggled so long.
