A lógica da suposição e a compreensão do faz-de- conta por parte das crianças
Os estudos sobre a teoria da lógica mental para o raciocínio condicional não revelam se crianças fazem julgamentos que são consistentes com o procedimento semântico dessa teoria para se. Foram realizados dois experimentos com crianças de seis a 11 anos e adultos universitários brasileiros e norte-americanos. Os mesmos foram apresentados a problemas silogísticos de diferentes formas. Os resultados mostram que crianças em idade escolar, como também…

A cross-linguistic study of children's comprehension of universal quantifiers
The development of children's grasp of lexical cues to universal quantification was investigated in 3- to 10-year-olds and in adult native speakers of Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese and English. The experiments focused on children's acquisition of the English quantifiers all and each and their counterparts in Mandarin and Portuguese. Participants selected best-fitting interpretations of sentences containing universal quantification from sets of pic…
Is nativism sufficient
The past and present state of the empiricism–nativism issue is analysed. Empiricist philosophical doctrine (‘no innate ideas’) distinguished idea from structure or mechanism. However, Chomsky's conception of innate linguistic universals erased this distinction. The elimination left would-be empiricists without a coherent and defensible position. I argue that the issue remains alive primarily because of tension between two scientific tasks that fa…

Can children use a verb without exposure to its argument structure
We hypothesize that canonical sentence schemas (e.g. Agent—verb-Patient) can sometimes assign argument structure to verbs. In particular, they provide a default argument structure early in learning when a verb's lexical entry may record the nature of the action but lack a specific argument structure. To test the theory and its application to causative verb errors (e.g. stay it there ), novel action verbs were modelled, some as causative, some as …

How does comprehension of passives develop? A comparison of actional and experiential verbs
Experiment I required first, third, and sixth graders to identify the actor or experiencer from active and passive sentences with actional and three subclasses of experiential verbs. Actional passives were understood better than experientials, with no difference among the subcategories of experiential verbs, and no effect of verb frequency or regularity. Response distributions for each verb type did not show two populations of subjects – one know…

The Acquisition of Phonology
Abbreviations and notational conventions Preface Introduction 1. Background 2. The child's phonology at two years 3. Longitudinal analysis of A's phonology 4. The nature of the acquisition of phonology 5. Linguistic implications of the child's acquisition of phonology Conclusions Appendix A Appendix B Appendix C References Index
On What Might Constitute Learnable Phonology
A generative treatment of the early stages of development of two children suggests that the main learning process in pronunciation consists of discovering and gaining control over the articulatory features required to make sounds heard. The lexical representation differs from the phonetic output at all stages because actual pronunciations are constrained by primitive or acquired articulatory processes that have the effect of imposing a phonotacti…
Growing up in Brooklyn
The Ontogeny of English Phrase Structure
Students of infants and of language have long wondered over the fact that a structure of such enormous formal complexity as language is so readily learned by organisms whose available intellectual resources appear in other respects quite limited. While a certain amount of work has been done on phonological development, and there has been much speculation about the acquisition of ‘meanings’, development at the morphological and syntactic levels ha…
