  • Jewish‐Arab relations in Israel

    John E Hofman, John Ε Hofman•ARTICLE•Patterns of Prejudice•1987•Referencias: 9

Prejudice is an important factor in relations between Jews and Arabs in Israel, and exacerbates conflict between the two groups. Conflict resolution is often seen as achievable through a ‘human relations’ approach: the eradication of prejudice, empathizing with fellow humans. But experience of group encounters in Israel suggests that social identity is more important; the reduction of conflict must follow the clarification of issues that come bet…

  • Measuring Locus of Control in a Hospital Setting

    Open Access•Ciporah S Tadmor, John E Hofman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

A 6-item health locus-of-control scale was freely adapted from the well known Rotter scale of perceived locus of control to differentiate between individuals who believe that even in a hospital setting they exercise some control over decisions affecting their health and those who look for medical caregivers, doctors, nurses, and technicians to assume external control. Test-retest reliability of the measure developed was 0.81, as obtained from 26 …

  • Social Identity and the Readiness for Social Relations Between Jews and Arabs in Israel

    Open Access•John E Hofman, John Ε Hofman•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1982•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 17

This paper examines the social identity of Arabs and Jews in Israel and its relationship to the readiness for establishing and maintaining intergroup contact. Social identity is defined in terms of self-esteem and the national, civic, religious, familial, residential, and vocational subidentities. The structural coherence of the indentity system was demonstrated for both Jews and Arabs, but while subidentities among Jewish subjects tend to be pos…

Changes in intimate friendship with same-sex and opposite-sex friends in preadolescence and adolescence were investigated using Sharabany's Intimacy Scale. The sample consisted of 480 Israeli children from the 5th, 7th, 9th, and llth grades who rated their friendship with a same-sex or opposite-sex best friend. There was a significant age difference in overall intimacy with same-sex friends. Frankness and spontaneity, knowing and sensitivity, att…

  • Young Arabs in Israel

John E Hofman, John Ε Hofman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•1976

The social identity of young Arabs in Israel was conceptualized as a set of subidentities which included the national (Arab), civic (Israeli), religious (Moslem, Christian, Druze), familial, and occupational subidentities. Forty male and female Arab high school and university students of three religious denominations were asked to express themselves on the extent to which each of those subidentities was important and attractive to them, and on th…

  • Concept Differentiation by Semantic and Visual Mediation

    Open Access•John E Hofman, John Ε Hofman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1975

The assumption of distance in interconcept space as an inverse function of similarity among concept profiles was supported by a technique of direct visual differentiation. 28 students of education each generated two matrices of interconcept distances, one by the well-known semantic differential technique and one by the manipulation of tokens on a checkered board. Configurations in the semantic and visual modes were isomorphous, that is, significa…

  • Readiness for social relations between Arabs and Jews in Israel

    Open Access•John E Hofman, John Ε Hofman•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1972•Citada por: 24•Referencias: 7

The conflict between Arabs and Jews is complicated by the fact that it takes place at two distinct levels, between countries and within countries. For example relations between the two peoples in Israel are affected by the struggle between Israel and the Arab states, but should not be considered totally dependent on the outcome of that struggle. Even in the hoped-for peace, the tension between Arab and Jewish citizens is likely to continue and ma…

  • Language Shift and Maintenance in Israel

    Open Access•John E Hofman, John Ε Hofman et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•1971•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

The revival of Hebrew as a living language has often been called a modern miracle, a series of events without natural causes. A tiny group of idealists decided about the turn of the century, in a small area now known as Israel, to insist upon the use of Hebrew. In this they were guided by the scholarly example of Eliezer Ben Yehuda who, about 1882, introduced spoken Hebrew into his home and circle of friends. The beginning of modern Hebrew, a fai…

According to a criterial referents theory of social attitudes, basic attitudinal dimensions such as progressivism and traditionalism in education tend to be independent because Ss will differentiate concepts criterial, or important, to their own positions more extensively than non-criterial concepts. Data reported in the present study, however, show that progressives do not appreciably differ from traditionalists in the way they structure both cr…
