    Open Access•Christopher Smart, J N Jennings•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•1986

  • Structure and landforms in Australia

    J N Jennings•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•1985•Referencias: 17

Differential erosion over a long subaerial history has resulted in a wide range of Australian structural landforms, commonly emphasized under the dry prevailing climate. They include Appalachian relief on ancient orogenic structures, more compact or even circular landforms associated with astroblemes and igneous intrusions, and linear features

  • A map of karst cave areas in Australia

    Open Access•J N Jennings•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•1983•Referencias: 1

A dot map of karst cave areas in Australia is presented together with a similar one redrawn from the National Atlas of the United States of America. The limitations of the map are described. The geographical circumstances behind Australia's poverty in these resources and the risks to which they are exposed are outlined

  • Of Time and Place. Essays in Honour of O.H.K. Spate

    James A Boutilier, J N Jennings et al.•ARTICLE•Pacific Affairs•1982

This book of essays honours Professor O.H.K. Spate of The Australian National University. Occupying the second University Chair of Geography to be created in Australia, Oskar Spate built a Department in the Research School of Pacific Studies there. Later, after serving for five years as Director of that School, he moved to its Department of Pacific and South Asian History where, as a Visiting Fellow, he is writing a three- volume history of the P…

Further instances of A‐tents in unglaciated granite terrain do not require fresh explanation. Three cases in glaciated country in a variety of rocks demonstrate an origin through pressure release as a result of glacial erosion and ice retreat. A‐tents in limestone on the unglaciated Cooleman Plain, N.S.W., are attributed to solutional offloading, though residual compressive stresses were probably released. In some cases the amount of apparent exp…

  • Late Quaternary Climates of Australia and New Guinea

    Open Access•J M Bowler, G S Hope et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1976

Between 60,000 and 40,000 B.P., northeastern Queensland, south New South Wales, and southeastern South Australia were drier than at present. From 40,000–30,000 B.P. a colder climate than at present is indicated from one New Guinea area. Dryness became even more accentuated in northeastern Queensland, whereas many lakes filled up in the southern mainland, probably because of increasing precipitation effectiveness there. Before the end of this peri…

IN an R.G.S. Research Memoir just published,1 a theory attributing the origi of most of the Norfolk Broads to certain natural ph siographical processes was advanced. Briefly, it postulated that the formation of the broads could be explained in terms of a geologically very recent marine transgression of the Norfolk river valleys, during which a thick wedge of estuarine clay was laid down over the earlier valley peats; the broads themselves were th…

  • Further Remarks on the Tasmanian Muttonbird

    Open Access•J N Jennings•ARTICLE•Erdkunde•1962

as Schweinfurth (1961) has demonstrated very well in this journal. Perhaps the geographical facet of the natural history of these birds which has most signi ficance is that of their migrations (fig. 1). This is best documented in the case of the Bass Strait muttonbird or Short-tailed Shearwater, Puffinus tenuirostris (Ser venty, 1953 & 1956; Marshall & Serventy, 1956). Preceded by their parents, the fledglings in their hunger leave their rookerie…
