Safety and immunogenicity after a 30-month boost of a subtype C Alvac-HIV (vCP2438) vaccine prime plus bivalent subtype C gp120/MF59 vaccine boost (HVTN 100)
Induction of broad, durable immune responses is a challenge in HIV vaccine development. HVTN 100 Part A administered subtype C-containing ALVAC-HIV at months 0 and 1, and ALVAC-HIV with bivalent subtype C gp120/MF59 at months 3, 6 and 12. As IgG binding antibody and T-cell responses were similar or greater at month 12.5 vs. month 6.5, but waned by month 18, we investigated vaccine-elicited immune responses after a month 30 boost in this study, HV…
Adherence and virologic suppression during the first 24 weeks on antiretroviral therapy among women in Johannesburg, South Africa - a prospective cohort study
Virologic response to NNRTI-treatment in the cohort was excellent. However, women who received sdNVP were at greater risk of virologic failure when adherence was <95%. Women exposed to sdNVP, and those with less education and less social support may benefit from additional adherence counseling to ensure the long-term success of ART. More than 80% adherence may be sufficient to maintain virologic suppression on NNRTI-based regimens in the short-te…
Effectiveness and Safety of Tenofovir Gel, an Antiretroviral Microbicide, for the Prevention of HIV Infection in Women
Vaginal Gel Versus HIV HIV prevention technologies for women are urgently needed, especially in sub-Saharan Africa where young women bear the greatest burden of the HIV epidemic. Abdool Karim et al. (p. 1168 ; published online 19 July) present the results of the CAPRISA 004 randomized control trial. The nearly 3-year-long trial, conducted in urban and rural South African women, tested the efficacy of a vaginal gel containing the antiretroviral dr…
Contraceptive Use and Fertility in Paraguay, 1987
In 1987, 38 percent of married Paraguayan women aged 15-44 were practicing contraception, with oral contraceptives being the most prevalent method. Fertility rates for the population were at corresponding levels, with an overall fertility rate of 5.4 births per woman. Fertility has not changed substantially for the nation as a whole since 1979, and contraceptive use has increased by only 6 percentage points. Findings from the present study are co…
Infant mortality and breast-feeding in North-Eastern Brazil
The effects of breast-feeding on infant health have been a topic of considerable discussion in recent years. In this paper multivariate techniques are used to examine the relationship between the failure to breast-feed and mortality among infants in four states of north east Brazil. It was found that breast-fed children were significantly more likely to survive infancy than children who were never breast-fed, even when other socio-economic, demog…

Defining legitimate births in Fulton County, Georgia, 1977
In 1977, the parents of 1,043 births recorded for 15 to 19 year old women in Fulton County, Georgia, were classified as married. However, only 36 per cent of these births could be linked with marriage certificates. An analysis of the unlinked birth certificates showed that the overwhelming majority of teenage parents did not appear to be legally married. The absence of a specific statement regarding marital status on birth certificates results in…
