Associations between self-management strategies and clinical outcomes in depression
The number of self-management strategies rated as useful showed a stronger correlation with personal recovery than with depressive symptom severity. The use of a greater number of self-management strategies may be associated with higher levels of personal recovery
Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of suspected difficult-to-treat depression
This study sheds light on the intricate nature of suspected DTD, emphasizing the coexistence of MDD, BD, and subthreshold depression within this category. Our findings underscore the necessity for thorough evaluations and tailored treatment approaches for managing suspected DTD
Factors encouraging participation in social activities after hospital discharge in people with severe mental illness who received occupational therapy
This study identified patients whose social participation after discharge could be boosted by OT that facilitates group adaptation. Our findings would facilitate the development of individualized add-on rehabilitation based on the effects of real-world OT practices
Assessing the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self-Report scores to predict continuous employment in mood disorder patients
The results emphasize the potential of the QIDS-SR as a prognostic instrument for predicting employment outcomes among individuals with depressive disorders. These findings further underscore the importance of managing depressive symptoms to mild or lower intensities to ensure ongoing employment
Real-world clinical determinants of alcohol dependence in outpatients with bipolar disorder
Background Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by mood swings between manic and depressed states that causes psychosocial problems. Cognitive function deteriorates with each recurrence, making it important to maintain remission through continued treatment. Bipolar disorder often co-occurs with alcohol dependence, which is known to lead to decreased treatment adherence and increased suicide risk. However, the real-world clinic…
Predictors of psychiatric hospitalization among outpatients with bipolar disorder in the real-world clinical setting
Our study revealed that 3.06% of outpatients with bipolar disorder were subjected to psychiatric hospitalization during a 1-year period that extended to September-October 2017. Our study suggested that bipolar I disorder, lower baseline GAF scores, unemployment, substance abuse and baseline mood state could be predictors of psychiatric hospitalization. These results may be useful for clinicians seeking to prevent psychiatric hospitalization for b…
Clinical characteristics and prescriptions associated with a 2-year course of rapid cycling and euthymia in bipolar disorder
RC and EUT generally exhibit conflicting characteristics, and the conflicting social backgrounds and factors contributing to their outcomes were distinctive. Understanding these clinical characteristics may be helpful in clinical practice for management of patients with BD
Physicians’ attitudes toward hypnotics for insomnia
This study suggested that physicians believed ORA to be an effective and safe hypnotic and were compelled to prescribe benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine frequently, choosing efficacy over safety
A Comparison between Perceptions of Psychiatric Outpatients and Psychiatrists Regarding Benzodiazepine Use and Decision Making for Its Discontinuation
Background: Although long-term use of benzodiazepines and z-drugs (BZDs) is not recommended, little is known about the stakeholders’ perceptions. This study aimed to assess and compare the perceptions of BZD use and decision making regarding its discontinuation between psychiatric outpatients and psychiatrists. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted. Results: Of 104 outpatients, 92% were taking hypnotics and 96% were taking anxiolytics f…
Development and field testing of a decision aid to facilitate shared decision making for adults newly diagnosed with attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder
BACKGROUND: The number of individuals who are diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during adulthood has increased in recent years. However, there is still no decision aid (DA) to help adults newly diagnosed with ADHD make decisions regarding further treatments. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the development process of a DA for adults newly diagnosed with ADHD and its field testing during the shared decision-maki…

Prescription of Anticholinergic Drugs in Patients With Schizophrenia
In several clinical guidelines for schizophrenia, long-term use of anticholinergic drugs is not recommended. We investigated the characteristics of the use of anticholinergics in patients with schizophrenia by considering psychotropic prescription patterns and differences among hospitals. A cross-sectional, retrospective prescription survey at the time of discharge was conducted on 2027 patients with schizophrenia from 69 Japanese hospitals. We e…
Attitudes and Difficulties Associated with Benzodiazepine Discontinuation
Long-term use of benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BZDs) may depend on clinicians' BZD discontinuation strategies. We aimed to explore differences in strategies and difficulties with BZD discontinuation between psychiatrists and non-psychiatrists and to identify factors related to difficulties with BZD discontinuation. Japanese physicians affiliated with the Japan Primary Care Association, All Japan Hospital Association, and Japanese Association …
Factors Associated With Time to Achieve Employment Through Occupational Support Programs in Patients With Mood Disorders

The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with time to achieve employment through the occupational support program (OSP) for patients with mood disorders. Methods: The participants were patients admitted to the Kyorin university hospital from April 2016 to April 2019. Patients who…
