Millstone of the Beginning of the Early Iron Age
Among the finds discovered during the study of the elite burial mound no. 7 of the Sargat culture at the Tartas-2 site, there is an upper part of the millstone. This is the first time such an artifact has been found on a closed complex in the Baraba forest-steppe. The tool dates back to the 7th century BC. The paper presents the results of its experimental and traceological study, as well as the analysis of the remaining residues of processed pro…
Cultic Complex of the Bronze Age in the Northern Baraba Region
The article presents new evidence of the Bronze Age, which was obtained from the excavations of a cultic complex of the Early–Advanced Bronze Age (early to mid third millennium BC) at the Karier Tai-1 settlement in the Baraba forest-steppe in the field season of 2025. Study of the Bronze Age Settlement in the Tai Locality (Ust-Tartas-5 Site as a Part of the Karier Tai-1 Complex)
In 2019, a team of scholars did a geophysical monitoring of a part of the left bank of the Tai locality in Novosibirsk Region. During this process, some anomalies which could indicate the presence of ancient structures were identified at the Karier Tai-1 archaeological site. One of them was explored in the 2025 field season. A large trapezoidal dark grey spot was discovered in the northern part of section 5. A humus-filled black spot of sub-recta…
Ornamentation Technique on Spindle Whorls of the Sargat Culture (the Evidence from the Galechnoe-1 Settlement)
This article discusses ornamentation techniques of ceramic spindle whorls – accidental finds at the Galechnoe-1 settlement of the Sargat culture (Vengerovo District, Novosibirsk Region). These items were shaped by hands from a single lump of clay, and were fired unevenly with their color ranging from bright red to dark gray. It is likely that they were fired under the same conditions as the pottery from the same period. The parallels to these ite…
Bayesian Modeling for the Construction Time of Burial Mound 7 at the Tartas-2 Burial Ground (the Sargat Culture)
This article presents the results of dating the samples from burial No. 2 in burial mound 7 at the Tartas-2 burial ground of the Sargat culture. A series of dates revealed the chronology of the sacrificial complex discovered in the mound of this object during the field season of 2023. The sacrificial complex contained the skulls of at least 33 horses, three cows, three sheep, and skeletons of six people. Thirteen samples were dated using the MICA…
The chronology of the Early Neolithic Baraba culture, southwestern Siberia
During the last decade, early Neolithic sites with unique flat-bottomed pottery as distinguishing feature were discovered in the southern part of Western Siberia at the Baraba forest-steppe and identified as the Early Neolithic Baraba Culture (briefly, Baraba culture). The culture is represented in settlements and ritual complexes, has households, as well as implements made of stone and bone. Samples of mammal bones, bird bones and bone artifacts…

Ceramic Spindle Whorls from Galechnoe-1, Sargat Culture
In this article we introduce a series of ceramic spindle whorls found at the Sargat culture settlement site of Galechnoe-1 into scientific circulation. This site was discovered in 2014 in the Vengerovsky District of the Novosibirsk Region. Currently, the cultural layer is heavily destructed because the entire area of the site is being actively plowed. Over several years of monitoring, we have collected more than twenty ceramic spindle whorl fragm…
Radiocarbon Chronology and Isotope Data of Ust-Tartasskiye Kurgany Mound 51, the Baraba Forest-Steppe
Results of radiocarbon dating of items from mound No. 51 of Ust-Tartasskiye Kurgany burial ground are presented. This is a key site of the Sargat culture in Baraba. Characteristics of samples and pretreatment procedure are provided. Twenty-four radiocarbon dates were generated. Radiocarbon ages correlate with biological ages of the deceased persons. Bayesian KDE chronology modeling suggests a short-term intense use of the site for burying those w…
The Chemurchek Anthropomorphs
The article studies peculiar anthropomorphic rock images of the Mongolian Altai, representing some persons in shoulder clothes. The co-authors analyzed the results of their own field studies and published materials from the excavated complexes of the Mongolian Altai, Tibetan petroglyphs and stone sculptures of Xinjiang. They offer an experience of typological research of the “Chemurchek type” anthropomorphic figures, a chronology and semantics of…
