Integrating local and regional environmental influences in the Velyka Andrusivka loess–palaeosol sequence, Middle Dnieper (Ukraine)
The Middle Dnieper region, situated within a transitional glacial–periglacial zone, preserves complex loess–palaeosol archives. This study reconstructs the environmental evolution of the Velyka Andrusivka sequence using a multiproxy approach integrating sedimentological, geochemical, mineralogical, magnetic, and palynological data supported by luminescence dating. The succession rests on Dnieper glacial till and comprises loess units from the las…
Upper Palaeolithic Occupations in The Middle Dnister Valley
In 2019, new excavations were carried out at Doroshivtsi III site, dated to the Last Glacial Maximum. Ten identifiable archaeological levels belong to the Gravettian technocomplex. In the article, detailed data about the faunal remains is presented. The remains of reindeer, horses, mammoths, a wolf, a vulpine, and also a crow have been identified. According to the data, the main species for hunting were reindeer, then horses. In comparison with t…
Luminescence dating of ancient kilns and gothic to baroque bricks from SE Poland – a comparison with archaeomagnetic data
The TL and OSL ages obtained from two ancient kilns and gothic to baroque bricks in the SE of Poland, were compared to their presumed historical ages and discussed. The luminescence ages of ancient kilns were also matched with the results of archaeomagnetic dating. The OSL and archaeomagnetic data indicates that the ancient kilns were last used not later than ca. 280 AD. This age corresponds well to the lower limit of the postulated age of fragme…
New advances in research on pre- and proto-historic settlement of Argi and Letti, Upper Nubia
New fieldwork in Argi and Letti (Southern Dongola Reach) has produced unique data on early Holocene settlement and burial practices. New surveys, backed by GIS data, shed light on true forms and preservation of settlements dating from the Paleolithic to the Kerma periods, providing an absolute chronology as well as exciting future directions
Archaeomagnetic studies of bricks from ancient buildings sampled in SE Poland (Central Europe)
Eastern periphery of the Magdalenian world. Wierzawice 31 hunting campsite (SE Poland)
Wierzawice 31 site is one of the easternmost Magdalenian sites, situated in the south-eastern corner of the Kolbuszowa Plateau surrounded, to the east, by the broad San River valley and, on the south, by the sub-Carpathian ice-marginal valley. This archaeological site lies in an area with surface deposits developed as periglacial stratified silty-sandy sediments about 10 m thick, adjoined in the NW by an isolated patch of loess of the island type…
Spatio-temporal variability of topoclimates and local palaeoenvironments in the Upper Dniester River Valley
Old site, new problems
New research at the Doroshivtsi site in Ukraine has provided data that allow fresh insights into a well-known and important Gravettian site in the Middle Dniester Valley
Re‐examining the age of the Affad MSA deposits in the Middle Nile Valley
We present data on the chronology of fluvial and aeolian sediments as well as ecofacts that allow us to indicate the timing of Middle Stone Age settlement in Affad on the Middle Nile. Previously published chronometric data based solely on (multi‐grain) optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates suggested the extremely late settlement and usage of Middle Stone Age technology in North‐East Africa during the Terminal Pleistocene (post‐Last Glacia…
On the edge of eastern and western culture zones in the early Late Pleistocene. Święte 9 – A new epigravettian site in the south-east of Poland
Turonian flint economy in the easternmost Magdalenian
Magdalenian communities exploited mostly local and regional good-quality lithic raw materials. In south-eastern Poland, being the easternmost fringe of the Magdalenian range, Turonian grey flint had a particular importance. Outcrops of this raw material occur both at the west and at the east sides the Vistula River Gorge. The varieties from the eastern area (called here "eastern Turonian flint" or ETF) are common among inventories of the Magdalen…
The climatic control of sedimentary environment changes during the Weichselian – An example from the Middle Vistula Region (eastern Poland)
Late Glacial environment and human settlement of the Central Western Carpathians
OSL/IRSL estimation for Nubian Complex Middle Stone Age settlement from Bayuda Desert in Sudan
Magdalenian settlement on the edge of the loess island
Sandy deposition in a small dry valley in the periglacial zone of the Last Glacial Maximum
