  • Genetic Portraits of the Yakut Regional Populations (Based on Y-Chromosome Polymorphism Data)

    D S Adamov, A Y Potanina et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025

  • Y-chromosome polymorphisms in Nogai subethnicities in the context of Caucasian gene pools

    Open Access•Elena V Balanovskaya, Elena V Balanovska et al.•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2025

The study of genetic history through Y-chromosome polymorphism in modern and ancient populations helps reconstruct ethnogenesis. Research on the Nogai gene pool, as descendants of ancient nomads, allows tracing migration routs in the Eurasian steppe corridor. The Nogai ethnic group formed in the Middle Ages, as a result of interactions of the populations of the Central Asian, West Siberian, Ural-Volga, North Caucasian, and East European historica…

  • Genetic Portraits of the Yakut Regional Populations (Based on Y-Chromosome Polymorphism Data)

    Open Access•D S Adamov, A Y Potanina et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025

We present data on SNP haplogroups and STR haplotypes of the Y-chromosome in main Yakut ethno-local populations. Clusters of STR haplotypes and median networks of principal haplogroup N3a2 (N-M1982) indicate three lines: N-M1983, N-M1933, and N-Y25011. The first one, widely distributed throughout Yakutia and present in one half of Yakut males, marks the putative descendants of Elley, the legendary progenitor of the Yakuts. Line N-M1933 is found w…

  • Diversity of gene pools in twelve Tuvan tribal groups (based on Y-chromosome haplogroup data)

    Open Access•Elena V Balanovska, Larissa D Damba et al.•ARTICLE•Moscow University Anthropology…•2025

Introduction. Studying the ethnogenesis of Tuvans through the prism of the gene pools of their ancestral groups makes it possible to highlight the problem of the Mongolian influence on the formation of their gene pool: Tuvans are characterized by close ethno-cultural ties with Mongol-speaking tribes of Central Asia; Tuvans have an increased contribution of the Mongoloid anthropological variant; the Tuvan language ranks first among Turkic language…

  • Genogeography of vitamin D receptor determinants (VDR gene) in Eurasian populations with different types of subsistence economy

    Open Access•Andrew I Kozlov, Galina G Vershubskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Moscow University Anthropology…•2025

Introduction. The body's ability to absorb vitamin D is determined, among other factors, by the activity of the vitamin D cellular receptor, which is encoded by the VDR gene. We considered intergroup differences in the carriage of VDR polymorphisms as the results of selection aimed at reducing the population frequencies of maladaptive variants. According to the literature, alleles A*TaqI (rs731236), G*BsmI (rs1544410), C*ApaI (rs7975232), and A*F…

  • The alliance of anthropology and populations genetics

    Open Access•Elena V Balanovska, E V Balanovskaya•ARTICLE•Moscow University Anthropology…•2024

Introduction. Russian population genetics arose in the depths of anthropology. Over time, the rapid development of genetic technologies created a tension between these two fields of science. In hope to strengthen the long-standing alliance between anthropology and genetics, this work attempts to describe some aspects of genetic characteristics that genetics deals with, discuss the problem of sample representativeness for so diverse genetic featur…

  • Variability of UCP1 and UCP3 uncoupling protein genes in relation to climate in indigenous populations of Siberia and the Far East

    Open Access•A I Kozlov, Galina G Vershubskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Moscow University Anthropology…•2024

Introduction. Several studies have demonstrated a correlation between variations in genes regulating human uncoupling proteins (UCP) and environmental factors. However, information on the intra- and interpopulation diversity of allele and genotype frequencies of UCP1 and UCP3 within the territory of Russia remains insufficient. This study aims to investigate the intra- and inter-ethnic variability of genetic determinants of activity of uncoupling…

  • Cline in genetic diversity of trehalase deficiency determinants in populations of Southern Siberia, Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and Mongolia

    Open Access•A I Kozlov, Vladimir Y Pylev et al.•ARTICLE•Moscow University Anthropology…•2023

Introduction. Trehalose or mushroom sugar has been increasingly used in the food industry in the past decades. To be absorbed in the human intestine, trehalose needs to be broken down by an enzyme known as trehalase. Today, it is known that the G→A substitution in the rs2276064 locus of the TREH gene results in the reduced activity of this enzyme. The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency of TREH (rs2276064) alleles and genotypes in the …

Open Access•Wolfgang Haak, Oleg Balanovsky et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Biology•2010

In Europe, the Neolithic transition (8,000-4,000 B.C.) from hunting and gathering to agricultural communities was one of the most important demographic events since the initial peopling of Europe by anatomically modern humans in the Upper Paleolithic (40,000 B.C.). However, the nature and speed of this transition is a matter of continuing scientific debate in archaeology, anthropology, and human population genetics. To date, inferences about the …
