  • Outpatient psychotherapeutic treatment of gambling disorder — lessons learned from Bavaria

Open Access•Bianca Pitzschel, Rebekka Redel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

Patients with disordered gambling behavior (according to ICD-10 criteria for F63.0) who receive psychotherapy often have additional mental disorders and higher overall care needs. This highlights the importance of integrated treatment approaches. The frequent use of CBT aligns with evidence-based practice and suggests potentially favorable therapeutic outcomes

  • Who are we reaching? Identifying subgroups among individuals seeking help for opioid use disorder

Open Access•Carla Faßbender, Carlotta Riemerschmid et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

The results highlight the heterogeneity of help-seekers with OUD and emphasize the need for targeted, class-specific care strategies. Individuals Primarily Using Opioids warrant further investigation, as this class may still comprise heterogeneous subgroups with diverse care needs. Individuals with Multiple SUDs may benefit from more flexible OAT frameworks that accommodate work and family responsibilities. For Individuals Who Inject Drugs , inte…

  • How many children have parents with gambling disorder – a Germany-based estimate

Open Access•Nina Stefan, Larissa Schwarzkopf et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

In Germany about 1 in 25 children has a parent with gambling disorder. Given that parental gambling disorder is an established risk factor for developing own gambling problems, more comprehensive addiction care and health policy are needed to address this issue. Integrated care and counselling offers targeting both gambling parents and their children may be a promising starting point. Special attention should be paid to separate living children i…

  • Can the THC concentration predict the number of patients with cannabis‐related diagnoses

Open Access•Jurgen Manthey, Moritz Rosenkranz et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2024

  • Gambling-related attitudes and dimensional structure of the Gabs-15 in outpatient addiction care patients

    Open Access•Andreas M Bickl, Johanna K Loy et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

As a one-dimensional conceptualization of gambling-related attitudes and beliefs might not sufficiently guide staff of outpatient treatment facilities regarding priority setting in gambling care, evidence on attitudes with particularly detrimental associations is highly warranted. Here, focussing on mitigating "gambling' fallacies" by tailored treatment strategies appears promising

  • Longitudinal associations between psychiatric comorbidity and the severity of gambling disorder

    Open Access•Pia M Wullinger, Andreas M Bickl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Addictions•2023

  • We are not the ones to blame’. Gamblers’ and providers’ appraisal of self-exclusion in Germany

Open Access•Lisa Kraus, Andreas M Bickl et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our results emphasize the dilemma of conflicting interests in both individuals experiencing gambling problems and providers. Rather than acting against the economic interests of employers, venue staff blame individuals experiencing gambling problems for lack of problem recognition. Conversely, individuals experiencing gambling problems blame the providers for not offering help. To address individuals experiencing gambling problems appropriate sta…

  • Self-exclusion from gambling

Open Access•Lisa Kraus, Ludwig Kraus et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

While there is evidence for self-exclusion (SE) as an individual-level harm reduction intervention, its effects on reducing harm from gambling at the population level remain unclear. Based on a review of national legal frameworks and SE programs, including their utilization and enforcement in selected high-income societies, the present analysis aims to explore the reach and strengths of SE in the protection of gamblers in these jurisdictions. It …

  • Age, period, and cohort effects on trends in outpatient addiction care utilization in the general Berlin population from 2008 to 2016

Open Access•Sara Specht, Larissa Schwarzkopf et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Age and cohort effects were the strongest drivers of trends in AUD- and ISUD-related outpatient addiction care utilization. Onset of help-seeking in earlier phases of AUD development should be enhanced as well as help-seeking for AUD and ISUD in general. The highest cohort-related rates in the baby boomer and following cohorts for AUD and ISUD underline an increased demand for addiction care

  • Changes in gambling behaviour and related problems in clients seeking help in outpatient addiction care

Open Access•Andreas M Bickl, Larissa Schwarzkopf et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Addictions•2021

  • Substance use disorder and the baby boom generation
