Proto-Slavic *rězъ and Russian рез “profit, interest” are analyzed in connection with IE. *h3reĝ- “to move along the straight line; move uniformly in one direction” reflected by Greek ὀρέγω_ and Vedic ŕjyati,_ṛñjáti. The latter verb has undergone a semantic development giving rise to “to gain control of, bring under domination”, and “to gain profit”. My hypothesis conflicts with the analysis of M.
