Biopsychosocial impacts of mother loss on daughters in Australia
We aimed to describe the biopsychosocial impacts of a mother's death at any stage in life on adult daughters in Australia. A total of 2735 mother-bereaved daughters completed an online survey about their experiences of mother loss and its impacts. We assessed several biopsychosocial outcomes, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prolonged grief disorder (PGD), quality of life (QoL), sleep distu…
The Role of Attachment, Insecurity, and Stress in Partner Maltreatment
Negative, destructive, and abusive behaviors in romantic relationships can vary from explicit kinds of abuse and aggression to more subtle and seemingly innocuous slights against or ways of treating a partner. However, regardless of the severity or explicit nature, these behaviors all, to one extent or another, reflect acts of invalidation, disrespect, aggression, or neglect toward a partner, and could be considered maltreatment of a partner. The…
Coping with global uncertainty
Following the global outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020, individuals report psychological distress associated with the "new normal"-social distancing, financial hardships, and increased responsibilities while working from home. Given the interpersonal nature of stress and coping responses between romantic partners, based on the systemic transactional model this study posits that perceived partner dyadic coping may be an important moderator betwee…
Coercive Controlling Behaviors and Reporting Physical Intimate Partner Violence in Australian Women
This study explores two approaches to measuring coercive controlling behaviors (CCBs)-counting how many different CCB types and examining the frequency of each CCB experienced-to examine their utility in explaining the relationship between CCBs and physical intimate partner violence (IPV). Australian women aged 18-68 years ( n = 739; M age = 31.58, SD age = 11.76) completed an online survey. Count and frequency CCB approaches yielded similar sign…
Examining associations between Covid-19 stressors, intimate partner violence, health, and health behaviors
The economic, social, and health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are expected to increase the occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. IPV victimization may, in turn, contribute to physical and mental health, substance use, and social distancing behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary objective of the current study was to understand the extent to which 1) COVID-19 stressors are associated with IPV victimization an…
Study Protocol for the Covid-19 Pandemic Adjustment Survey (CPAS)
This study will provide timely information on the mental health impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on parents and children in Australia; identify communities, parents, families, and children most at risk of poor outcomes; and identify potential factors to address in clinical and public health interventions to reduce risk
Birth status and adult attachment
Numerous studies have investigated the effects of having an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy on parents. Less is known about the long-term effects of unwanted or unplanned pregnancy on the child and his or her personality. Here we examined in one correlational study and three experiments the associations between birth status (being unwanted, unplanned, or neither) and adult attachment. In general, being unwanted, and to a lesser extent unplanned, …
