Peer Group Support to Children and Adolescents with HIV
Children and adolescents with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) often experience poorer treatment outcomes than adults due to inconsistent adherence, leading to poor viral suppression, increased morbidity, and higher mortality. While studies in Sub-Saharan Africa have shown that peer group support can improve adherence among adolescents, its effectiveness in Asian populations remains unclear. This study evaluated the impact of peer group…
Pertussis seasonal variation in Northern Vietnam
The pertussis incidence in Northern Vietnam varied between seasons, peaking in the hot season (April-July). However, severe patients and deaths increased in the mild season (December-March). Interventions, for example, communication activities on pertussis and vaccination, are of immense importance in lowering the prevalence of pertussis. In addition, early diagnoses and early warnings performed by health professionals should be encouraged
Antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Vietnamese children with severe pneumonia
Background Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common bacterium that causes community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. The rate of S. pneumoniae resistance to antibiotics is increasing, particularly in patients with severe CAP. Therefore, the level of antibiotic resistance of S. pneumoniae causing severe CAP in Vietnamese children requires regular monitoring. Methods This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Nasopharyngeal aspiration sp…
Prevalence of Opportunistic Infections and Associated Factors in HIV-Infected Men Who Have Sex With Men on Antiretroviral Therapy in Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi, Vietnam
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of opportunistic infections (OIs) and factors associated with acquiring OIs in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) in comparison to those of heterosexual patients. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 82 HIV-infected MSM and 120 HIV-infected heterosexual men in Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi, Vietnam. Demographical characteristics and clinical data were colle…
An exploratory assessment of the preference for eHealth interventions to prevent HIV and sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men in Hanoi, Vietnam
High acceptance and perceived need for an online HIV/STI intervention were reported. The importance of establishing trust within the MSM community as a reliable source of information was emphasized, as well as the importance of confidentiality
HIV-related stigma
Stigma has been identified as a major barrier to HIV response. While much is known about stigma directed towards people living with HIV (PLHIV), less is known about stigma experienced by health workers who treat PLHIV. This study aims to explore the perceptions and experiences of health workers regarding how stigma influences their work with HIV-positive patients. The study employed a qualitative design involving individual semi-structured in-dep…
Antibiotic use and resistance in emerging economies
Future legislation regarding antibiotic access must alter incentives for purchasers and providers and ensure effective enforcement. The Ministry of Health recently initiated a national action plan and approved a multicenter health improvement project to strengthen national capacity for antimicrobial stewardship in Viet Nam. This analysis provided important input to these initiatives. Our methodologies and findings may be of use to others across t…
Gender differences in quality of life outcomes of HIV/Aids treatment in the latent feminization of HIV epidemics in Vietnam
Understanding gender-specific predictors of Health-related Quality of Life (HRQL) outcomes of HIV/AIDS treatment is necessary in the latent feminization of HIV epidemics in Vietnam. This study assessed HRQL and its predictors among men and women with HIV/AIDS. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 155 patients (36.8% women, mean age=31.4) registering for antiretroviral treatment (ART) at Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi General Hospital, Quang Ninh Provi…
“It is not that I forget, it's just that I don't want other people to know”
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) started to become more widely available in Vietnam in 2005. However, up to now, very little is known about factors influencing ART adherence among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Vietnam. This qualitative study aimed to describe factors influencing ART adherence among PLHIV in a northern province in Vietnam, and to explore possibilities of home delivery of ART. Forty-eight participants (36 men and 12 women), includi…
