  • Commodity option pricing efficiency before Black, Scholes, and Merton

Open Access•Doug Chambers, David Chambers et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 53

It is often thought that the arrival of the Black-Scholes-Merton (BSM) model of option pricing in the early 1970s allowed traders to understand how to price and value options with greater precision. However, our study suggests that interwar commodity options traders may have been able to intuit 'fair' value and to adjust their prices to changes in the market environment well before the advent of this innovative model. A scarcity of historical pri…

  • The Rise and Fall of the German IPO Market, 1870-1938

Open Access•Carsten Burhop, Doug Chambers et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2018

This study of over 1,000 initial public offerings (IPOs) on the Berlin stock exchange from German unification to the eve of World War II draws attention to the importance of regulation and deepens our understanding of German stock market development. An increasingly exacting regulatory environment from the early 1880s to 1914 made a vital contribution to the higher likelihood of firms going public surviving. In the inhospitable regulatory setting…

  • Ownership dispersion and the London Stock Exchange's ‘two-thirds rule’

    Brian R Cheffins, Dmitri K Koustas et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2013•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 7

In the UK, in contrast to most other countries, a hallmark of corporate governance is a separation of ownership and control. There is evidence suggesting that this pattern may have been the norm in Britain as far back as the late nineteenth century. This paper investigates the extent to which law, in the form of a London Stock Exchange listing rule that prohibited the quotation of a class of securities unless two-thirds of the securities quoted h…

  • Gentlemanly capitalism revisited

    Open Access•Doug Chambers, David Chambers•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2009•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 39

Allegations of British capital market failure are numerous, but frequently contentious. This paper revisits the literature by highlighting the post-1945 market for initial public offerings (IPOs) as a clear instance of capital market failure. Despite the tender method delivering substantially lower underpricing than the traditional fixed-price offer method, it was adopted by only one in 10 firms going public. This missed opportunity cost issuing …

  • Storys of Plants

Doug Chambers•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•1997

Mary Capel Somerset, Duchess of Beaufort, began seriously to collect plants in the 1690s. Assembled by such well-known gardeners and botanists as George London and Leonard Plukenet, her collection included seeds and plants from the West Indies, Africa, India, Sri Lanka, China and Japan. Her collections were not of dead plants, however, but of seeds and plants intended for propagation in her gardens at Badminton, Gloucestershire and Beaufort House…

  • Plans as Promises

    Open Access•Doug Chambers, David Chambers•ARTICLE•Public Administration•1984•Citada por: 3

Some planning activities of organizations operate happily; others are muddled or ritualistic. A review of the activities which operate happily suggests a useful distinction between the performative sense of planning as doing something (plans as promises) and the indicative sense of planning as describing something (e.g. plans as forecasts). This distinction is important in the context of the management of public enterprises, where an inaccurate v…

  • Problem-Solving Performance Inside a Publicly-Owned Corporation

    Open Access•Doug Chambers, D J Chambers et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1978•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 5

This study was aimed at evaluating aspects of a publicly owned corporation 'sperformance in terms of process rather than in terms of financial outcomes. An episode was chosen where performance in dealing with relatively well-defined problems might be appraised through specifying the task environment and identifying the problem representation and search processes employed. The use made of formal systems modeling and analysis in the study is to spe…
