Considering the increased institutionalization of scholar-activist research across many university contexts, this reflection critically engages the assumed harmony between scholarship and activism in migration research. • Ambiguous Ages, Ambivalent Youths

    Open Access•Ulrike Bialas•ARTICLE•Migration Politics•2023•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 29

Many of the unaccompanied young migrants who have sought asylum in Germany since 2015 do not own documentation of their birth dates or even know their exact ages. Yet asylum and youth welfare laws distinguish precisely between minors and adults, down to the day, thus making it necessary for the German state to estimate the birth dates of young migrants and compelling some of the migrants to claim to be minors. In this article, drawing on years of…

    Open Access•Ulrike Bialas•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2022•Referencias: 58

Scholars can rarely make causal claims about migration probabilities and outcomes. Leveraging a natural experiment based on the randomness of offspring sex, this paper uses the German SOEP Migration Sample to examine the effect of having a first-born son or daughter on parents' likelihood to migrate and integrate. It shows that (non-Christian) parents of sons are more likely to migrate to Germany, but parents of daughters fare better after migrat…

    Open Access•Ulrike Bialas, Jagat Sohail•ARTICLE•Ethos•2022•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 34

We were both puzzled by our interlocutors' repeated professed desires to leave Germany, often when their lives here were improving. We wondered how they could possibly fantasize about repeating the experiences of their initial flight, which were deeply wounding and traumatic. We argue against a reading of trauma and agency as existing in opposition…
