  • Crossing the Sahara to Paradise

    Erin Twohig•ARTICLE•Expressions maghrébines•2024

Riadh Hadir's work of dystopian fiction, Pupille , tells of a post-apocalyptic future, in which Africa below the Sahara has purportedly been irradiated and rendered inhospitable to life. Yet the novel's protagonists discover an entirely alternate reality, as they undertake a trans-Saharan migration towards an African utopia. While Pupille critiques Africa's absence from Maghrebi futuristic literature and reverses the geographic direction of migra…

  • Spaces to play

    Erin Twohig•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2023•Referencias: 17

Critical reception of Kaouther Adimi’s 2019 novel Les petits de Décembre has focused on elements of the story about a youth-led protest that seemed to anticipate the hirak movement of 2019. This article argues that the novel is in fact in dialogue with a much broader historical narrative around the use of football, and other playful techniques of resistance, as a means of political protest in Algeria. From the famous FLN team of the 1950s and 60s…

  • Beyond the Francophone Maghreb

Ziad Bentahar, Erin Twohig•ARTICLE•Journal of the African Literature…•2020•Referencias: 5

The study of North African literatures has been firmly rooted in francophone frameworks since the 1960s, an approach that perpetuates colonial categories of both space and language. It is thus imperative to continue to push the study of North African cultural production beyond the geographic and linguistic limitations of the so-called Francophone Maghreb. This Introduction outlines the history of the study of North African literatures, and sugges…

  • Gender, Genre, and Literary Firsts

Erin Twohig•ARTICLE•Journal of Middle East Women s…•2019•Referencias: 10

This article questions the conventional wisdom that Ahlam Mosteghanemi’s Dhakirat al-jasad was the first Arabic-language novel written by an Algerian woman. Published more than a decade earlier, Zhor Wanisi’s novel Min yawmiyat mudarrisa hurra received less critical attention, despite representing an important contribution to Algerian literature and women’s life writing. Rather than accepting the “first” novel as an objective category, this artic…

  • Multiplying Women's Voices

Erin Twohig, Erin Twohig Erin Twohig•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2017

Leila Abouzeid's novel Al-Faṣl al-akhīr [The Last Chapter] subverts traditional education narratives that recount a young male narrator's progress through formal education. In its place, this text offers readers a glimpse into the world of Aisha, a successful Moroccan career woman whose erudition and skill in Arabic serve as an example to others. In this article, I argue that Aisha's nontraditional approach to "educating" those around her serves …

  • Literature and Amazigh language debates

    Erin Twohig•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2017•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 17

This paper examines the intersection between fictional literature and language politics in Morocco, by looking at literature that depicts Amazigh communities. Specifically discussed is the contribution of literary texts in ‘other’ languages, whether via translation or original versions, to imagining the potential and limits of Amazigh language promotion on a national and global level. The novels Un youyou dans la mosquée (A youyou in the mosque),…
