Continuous Geographical Distributions of Musical Patterns
Musical interval patterns may be considered as elementary Markov chains and subject to computer analysis. The musics of 10 Northwest Coast and Eskimoan groups were analyzed in terms of information theory and the results plotted along a continuum of increasing distance, revealing a regular rate of change for the interval patterns in question

Many observers have commented on the widespread incidence of cross-sex identification among musicians in our own and many other cultures.
