Addressing geographical disparities in the allocation of hospital human resources
BACKGROUND: Human resources are fundamental to improving both service quality and patient outcomes. Given the critical role of accurate data on workforce distribution as a key hospital resource in planning and policymaking, this study aims to assess inequalities in the distribution of hospital human resources and their association with hospital mortality rates across the provinces of Iran. DATA AND METHODS: This cross-sectional quantitative study…
Integrating Multi-Source Qualitative Data Using Causal Loop Diagrams
Health systems, as complex adaptive systems, are influenced by the intertwined interactions among various actors and policies interactions that often defy explanation through linear analytical approaches. This article presents the methodological framework that integrates multi-source qualitative data through the use of system dynamics causal loop diagrams, thereby enabling the researcher to progressively develop and refine a systems-thinking pers…

Achieving universal health coverage; implementation of the ‘supporting physician retention in deprived areas’ programme in Iran
From the WHO’s perspective, trained and motivated healthcare workers can promote community access to essential health services in deprived areas; this could also help achieve the millennium development goals. The concentration of healthcare workers in the capital has caused a lack of them in deprived areas and made delivering services difficult in almost all rural and underdeveloped areas. So, one of the main concerns of all health systems is pla…
Impacts of economic sanctions on population health and health system
BACKGROUND: Formal evidence regarding the effects of sanctions on population health status and the health system is scarse in Iran. Given the intricate and multifaceted nature of sanctions, a nuanced understanding of their impact is imperative. We aimed to investigate the magnitude and effects of sanctions on population health and healthcare system during the last two decades in Iran. DESIGN: This is a mixed-methods research. We quantified the im…

Health Equity Impact Assessment (Heia) reporting tool
Needs assessment, monitoring during implementation, health impact assessment, and other tools such as monitoring outcome reports, appraisals, and checklists are all methods for assessing health equity impact. Other equity-focused indicators, such as the equity lens and equity appraisal, may have slightly different goals than the HEIA. Similarly, the formats for presenting and publishing HEIA reports might vary, depending on the target population …
Two-Step Estimation of the Impact of Contextual Variables on Technical Efficiency of Hospitals

Inequality in prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension in Iran
This study showed a pro-rich inequality in the prevalence and control of hypertension in Iran. We call for expanding the coverage of complementary insurance to reduce inequality of hypertension prevalence and control as compared with other factors it can be manipulated in short run. We furthermore advocate for interventions to reduce the inequality of hypertension control between rural and urban areas
The impact of social determinants of health on early childhood development
With regard to the challenges related to the social determinants of ECD, such as increasing social harms, decreasing social capital, lack of public awareness, increasing socio-economic inequities, economic instability, which can lead to the abuse and neglect of children or unfair differences in their growth and development, the following policy-making options are proposed: focusing on equity from early years in policies and programs, creating int…
Socioeconomic determinants of unmet need for outpatient healthcare services in Iran
It seems that Iran is still suffering from unmet need for outpatient services, most of which emerges from its health system performance. The majority of the unmet health needs could be addressed through improving financial as well as organizational policies. Special attention is needed to address the unmet need among individuals with poor health status
Integrated early childhood development policy in Iran
As a multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral field with different domains, early childhood development (ECD) requires a more active role on the part of policymakers in governmental levels in supporting the related policies. Unless policymakers change their approach to decrease nonintegrated and non-comprehensive policymaking for ECD, child development will be compromised, which endangers the eventual sustainability of the society since improved IECD…
Setting research priorities to achieve long-term health targets in Iran
BACKGROUND: In 2015, it was estimated that the burden of disease in Iran comprised of 19 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), 74% of which were due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The observed leading causes of death were cardiovascular diseases (41.9%), neoplasms (14.9%), and road traffic injuries (7.4%). Even so, the health research investment in Iran continues to remain limited. This study aims to identify national health resea…
Geographical disparities in child mortality in the rural areas of Iran
PURPOSE: We performed this study to assess the trend of geographical disparities between rural areas located in the catchment areas of 41 medical universities in Iran from 1993 to 2008. We evaluated four indicators including rates for neonatal mortality (NMR), infant mortality (IMR), under-5 mortality (U5MR) and crude death (CDR). METHODS: We got about 656 university-year data points for each of the indicators (missing data <0.5%). The people und…
