Engineering education is at a critical juncture where supporting student mental health is essential for fostering persistence, equity, and the development of a resilient and innovative workforce. Yet, undergraduate engineering students experiencing mental health concerns are often unlikely to seek professional help. Women face more negative health outcomes than men due to relationship distress, but little is understood about why heterosexual women do or do not seek couple therapy. The present study addressed this gap by using the theory of planned behavior within an alternative structural equation modeling framework to examine the links between relational schemas and intention to seek couple therapy in a sample of heterosexual women ( N = 302) who were unhap…

  • Is stigma internalized? The longitudinal impact of public stigma on self-stigma.

David L Vogel, Rachel L Bitman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Counseling Psychology•2013

Stigma is considered an important barrier to seeking mental health services. Two types of stigma exist: public stigma and self-stigma. Theoretically, it has been argued that public stigma leads to the development of self-stigma. However, the empirical support for this assertion is limited to cross-sectional data. Therefore, the goal of this research was to examine the relationship between public stigma and self-stigma over time. Perceptions of pu…

The present study examines perceived discrimination faced by religious ‘nones’. After distinguishing between atheists, agnostics, and ‘nones’ who are deists or theists, we use nationally representative data from the 2008 American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) to study the contexts in which these various types of religious ‘nones’ have reported experiencing discrimination. The strongest predictor of such discrimination was not theological…

    Joseph H Hammer, David L Vogel et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2012•Citada por: 23•Referencias: 20

The present study examined the relationships between traditional Western masculine norms, self-stigma, and attitudes toward counseling among 4,748 men from different community sizes, and different education and income levels. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses suggest that, across all male subgroups, masculine norms were linked to self-stigma and, in turn, attitudes toward counseling. However, several clear differences in the strengths o…

This paper analyzes terminology in the sociology of religion to illustrate proreligious hegemony and the construction of deviant identities for the non-religious. The paper begins by analyzing the current terminology used to refer to the non-religious and makes suggestions for less-biased terminology. The article then uses the “found” terminology to illustrate how language and definitions function to marginalize the non-religious and turn them in…

    David L Vogel, Stephen R Wester et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2013•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 15

Why do men tend to underutilize mental health services? One reason may be that men are less frequently referred to seek such services. Indeed, male friends and family members may be particularly unlikely to refer men to seek mental health services, as it means going against the traditional male gender role proscription of talking to other men about emotional issues. This study is the first to explore how men’s experiences of gender role conflict …

Although depression among men is becoming better understood, men still underuse counseling services. Hence, there is an important need for improved ways to reach out to depressed men. This study examined the efficacy of a male-sensitive brochure aimed toward improving attitudes about seeking counseling and reducing the self-stigma of seeking counseling among 1,397 depressed men who had not previously sought help for their depression. Results indi…

    Open Access•Gary I Schulman, Joseph H Hammer et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•1988•Referencias: 8

Multivariate analyses are used to examine stability and changes in the predictors of mental illness diagnoses with the introduction of a revised diagnostic system in the U.S. The impact of the shift from DSM II to DSM III is studied in three outpatient clinics. Among our findings is support for the relationship of income and gender to receiving the diagnosis of schizophrenia. This is found both under DSM II and the more behaviorally-based DSM III…

  • “Boys don't cry”

David L Vogel, Sarah R Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Counseling Psychology•2011

The role of conformity to dominant U.S. masculine norms as an antecedent to help-seeking attitudes in men has been established using convenience samples made up largely of college-age and European American males. However, the role of conformity to masculine norms on help-seeking attitudes for noncollege-age men or for men from diverse backgrounds is not well understood. To fill this gap in the literature, the present study examined the cross-cult…
