Association of menthol-flavoured cigarette smoking with all-cause and cause-specific mortality risk
Findings of a unique excess mortality risk associated with menthol cigarettes provide additional scientific evidence-apart from their known impacts on initiation and cessation-in support of menthol flavour regulation in the USA and similar policies in LMICs. Public communication efforts must reiterate that quitting all cigarette types is the only safe option to reduce disease risk
Evaluation of a Novel Ambient Light Survey Question in the Cancer Prevention Study-3
Nighttime light exposure may increase cancer risk by disrupting the circadian system. However, there is no well-established survey method for measuring ambient light. In the Cancer Prevention Study-3, 732 men and women answered a light survey based on seven environments. The light environment in the past year was assessed twice, one year apart, and four one-week diaries were collected between the annual surveys. A total of 170 participants wore a…
Global estimates of mortality associated with long-term exposure to outdoor fine particulate matter
Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is a major global health concern. Quantitative estimates of attributable mortality are based on disease-specific hazard ratio models that incorporate risk information from multiple PM 2.5 sources (outdoor and indoor air pollution from use of solid fuels and secondhand and active smoking), requiring assumptions about equivalent exposure and toxicity. We relax these contentious assumptions by co…
Long-Term Ozone Exposure and Mortality in a Large Prospective Study
An Integrated Risk Function for Estimating the Global Burden of Disease Attributable to Ambient Fine Particulate Matter Exposure
Background: Estimating the burden of disease attributable to long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in ambient air requires knowledge of both the shape and magnitude of the relative risk (RR) function. However, adequate direct evidence to identify the shape of the mortality RR functions at the high ambient concentrations observed in many places in the world is lacking. Objective: We developed RR functions over the entire global expo…
