Testing of a novel questionnaire of Household Exposure to Wood Smoke
Household air pollution from wood smoke (WS), contributes to adverse health effects in both low- and high-income countries. However, measurement of WS exposure has been limited to expensive in-home monitoring and lengthy face-to-face interviews. This paper reports on the development and testing of a novel, self-report nine-item measure of WS exposure, called the Household Exposure to Wood Smoke (HEWS). A sample of 149 individuals using household …
Determinants of Self-Care in Patients With Heart Failure
Introduction: Self-care is recognized as a means for improving outcomes of heart failure (HF), yet studies have not addressed what predicts successful self-care in collectivist cultures like Lebanon. Methodology : Self-care was measured, using the Arabic Self-Care of HF index, in 100 participants with HF (76% males; mean age 67.59) recruited from a tertiary medical center. Results : Self-care was suboptimal, with mean scores of 67.26, 66.96, and …

Differences in Illness Representation among Pulmonary Patients and their Providers
This investigation examined how patient and provider groups represent 11 descriptors (concepts) of breathing and breathlessness. Two patient groups, those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and those with asthma, and two provider groups, pulmonologists and nurse specialists (PNS), rated the dissimilarity between each of 55 pairs of concepts on visual analogue scales (VAS). The results demonstrate differences between the groups in i…
Dyadic interdependence on affect and quality-of-life trajectories among women with breast cancer and their partners
This study explored interdependence on quality-of-life factors for women with breast cancer and their partners. Multiple theoretical perspectives predict that the emotional distress experienced by women with breast cancer would be shared by their partners. To test these predictions, 48 women with breast cancer and their partners (husbands, daughters, friends, or other relations) participated in a three-wave, 10- week, longitudinal study. Quality-…
