  • A self-determination theory perspective of motivations for cannabis-related harm reduction behaviours

    Dylan K Richards, Matison W McCool et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2026

OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate an expanded and adapted version of the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ) to assess the internalization continuum of motivation per self-determination theory (SDT) for responsible cannabis use and cannabis protective behavioural strategies (PBS). METHODS AND MEASURES: We recruited 1,196 college students (Study 1) and 1,409 adults (Study 2) who reported past-month cannabis to complete online surveys; a …

    Open Access•Mariah Abney, Aislinn C Rookwood et al.•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2025•Referencias: 4

American Indians and Alaska Natives experience disproportionately high cancer diagnoses and death rates. This study aims to elucidate American Indian and Alaska Native understandings of cancer as voiced through poetry. Ten writers submitted poems in response to a call for American Indians and Alaskan Natives to share their perspectives, experiences, and knowledge about cancer through poetry. Poetry submissions were analyzed for emergent themes th…

  • Negative urgency as a state‐level process

    Open Access•Keyonna M King, Madison C Feil et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2025•Referencias: 76

OBJECTIVE: Test whether global self-reports of urgency moderated the within-person associations of affect and impulsive behaviors. BACKGROUND: Negative urgency is a personality trait that is a risk factor for a range of psychopathology. Although it is assumed that global self-reports of urgency measure individual tendencies to act more impulsively in the face of negative emotions, evidence from ecological momentary assessment studies is mixed. ME…

    Open Access•Keyonna M King, Regina Idoate et al.•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2024•Referencias: 1

The U.S. health care system presents American Indian/Alaska Native populations with inequitable challenges that result in some of the worst health outcomes in the country. The literature indicates that increasing the proportion of American Indian/Alaska Native health professionals can improve these health disparities. This study aimed to explore the severe under-representation of American Indians and Alaska Natives in Nebraska's health profession…

  • The relation between stress and impulsivity during the first year of college

Open Access•Katherine Seldin, Liliana Lengua et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2023

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has established that short-term and persistent stress negatively impact mental health, with one proposed consequence being increased impulsivity. The present study tests the short-term and persistent associations between stress and three facets of global self-reports of impulsivity: negative urgency, lack of premeditation, and lack of perseverance, among young adults across 6 months of their first year of college. MET…

  • Indirect associations between impulsivity and alcohol outcomes through motives for drinking responsibly among U.S. college students

    Dylan K Richards, Jack T Waddell et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2023

The aim of the present study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of the associations between facets of impulsivity and alcohol outcomes through motives for drinking responsibly described by self-determination theory among college students. Participants (N=2,808) were part of a multisite investigation of college student drinking across 10 universities in 8 states in the U.S. who reported past-month drinking. Results of a structural equation…

  • The daily association between affect and alcohol use

    Open Access•Jonas Dora, Marilyn Piccirillo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2023•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 5

Influential psychological theories hypothesize that people consume alcohol in response to the experience of both negative and positive emotions. Despite two decades of daily diary and ecological momentary assessment research, it remains unclear whether people consume more alcohol on days they experience higher negative and positive affect in everyday life. In this preregistered meta-analysis, we synthesized the evidence for these daily associatio…

  • Stress Correlates Related to Depressive Symptoms Among Young Black Men in Southern California

    Open Access•Keyonna M King, Markisha Key-Hagan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Men s Health•2022

Black men experience higher levels of chronic stress, life stressors, and discrimination due to oppressive social and economic conditions. Black men are at greater risk of depression, but most published research on stress and depression has focused on Black people in general, Black women, or older Black men. We sought to determine whether discrimination, perceived stress, major life stress, daily hassles, and social capital were associated with d…

  • Behavioral Willingness, Descriptive Normative Perceptions, and Prescription Stimulant Misuse among Young Adults 18-20

    Nicole Fossos-Wong, D Litt et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2022

Objective: It is critical to gain further understanding of etiologic factors, such as descriptive normative perceptions and behavioral willingness, that are associated with prescription stimulant misuse (PSM) among young adults. Our primary hypotheses were that descriptive normative perceptions for PSM (i.e., perceptions of how much and how often others engage in PSM) and perceived peer willingness (i.e., perceptions of how open others are to PSM…

  • Interpreting Interaction Effects in Generalized Linear Models of Nonlinear Probabilities and Counts

Connor McCabe, Max A Halvorson et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2022

Psychology research frequently involves the study of probabilities and counts. These are typically analyzed using generalized linear models (GLMs), which can produce these quantities via nonlinear transformation of model parameters. Interactions are central within many research applications of these models. To date, typical practice in evaluating interactions for probabilities or counts extends directly from linear approaches, in which evidence o…

  • Specific emotion and momentary emotion regulation in adolescence and early adulthood

Open Access•Michele R Smith, Katherine Seldin et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2022

Emotion regulation (ER) is an important factor in resilience and overall well-being throughout development, and youth report increased variation in emotion and capacity for regulation across adolescence and early adulthood. Specific emotions may be associated with the use of different ER strategies, but much evidence exclusively collapses across negative and positive affect or may not reflect the daily experience of emotion and emotion regulation…

Although community violence is an established risk factor for youth aggression, less research has examined its relation with internalizing psychopathology. This study examined associations of community violence exposure with internalizing symptoms, and state and trait emotion dysregulation as mechanisms underlying these associations, in 287 adolescents aged 16-17 (45.6% male; 40.8% White). Community violence exposure was associated with internali…
