The Early to Middle Pleistocene Transition (EMPT) is characterised by major environmental changes and evolutionary innovations within the genus Homo but the scarcity of the African EMPT fossil and archaeological records obscures its palaeoecological context. Here, we present archaeological and faunal evidence from a newly excavated West-Turkana EMPT site-Kanyimangin

  • Holocene climate events and associated land use changes in the eastern coast of India

    Open Access•Rayees Ahmad Shah, Imran Khan et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

The Holocene arid events and related societal responses are important scientific inquiries due to concerns about their reoccurrences in the future. In the Indian subcontinent, significant number of studies have focussed on understanding the Holocene aridification events at 8.2 and 4.2 ka. Despite these studies, high resolution palaeoclimatic records from the eastern India during Holocene, particularly around the above-mentioned aridification even…

Open Access•Aurélie Mounier, Fredrick Kyalo Manthi et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2022

The Trans-Evol project (Early to Middle Pleistocene Transition: Evolution and diversity of African hominin fossil populations) is a collaboration between the CNRS, the National Museums of Kenya and the University of Cambridge. The project is opening new archaeological excavations in West-Turkana (Kenya) to document the behavioural, cognitive and morphological diversity of hominin populations during the Early to Middle Pleistocene Transition (EMPT…

  • The marine record of the onset of farming around the Arabian Sea at the dawn of the Bronze Age

    Open Access•Alexandra T Gourlan, Francis Albarède et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Referencias: 10

The rise and fall of human cultures are strongly modulated by the strong environmental changes taking place during the Holocene. Here, we use the sedimentological and geochemical records of a core taken in the Arabian Sea, west of Kerala, to identify potential factors that may reflect on-land history of local civilizations, in particular the Harappan culture which appeared and collapsed in the Indus Valley during the early and middle Bronze Age. …

We present a comprehensive record of Holocene (11,590–628 cal. yr BP) climate and hydrographic changes around the Wular Lake located in Kashmir Valley, India. Based on the multi-proxy investigations, we have identified three phases of wet climate conditions that prevailed from the commencement of the Holocene Epoch – 9000 cal. yr BP, 8100–6650 cal. yr BP and 6350–5000 cal. yr BP, whereas periods of dry climate were observed during 9000–8100 cal. …

Open Access•Priyanka Raja, Hema Achyuthan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

A multiproxy study involving sedimentology, palynology, radiocarbon dating, stable isotopes, and geochemistry was carried out on the Parsons Valley Lake deposit, Nilgiris, India, to determine palaeoclimatic fluctuations and their possible impact on vegetation since the late Pleistocene. The 72-cm-deep sediment core that was retrieved reveals five distinct palaeoclimatic phases: (1) Warm and humid conditions with a high lake stand before the last …

    Open Access•M R Resmi, Hema Achyuthan•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Referencias: 5

The present-day Palar River and its palaeochannel located in the Southern Peninsular India were investigated with a multidisciplinary approach. The main aim of the study was to reconstruct the palaeoenvironment history of the Palar River basin and to delineate the role of Holocene fluctuations that played a major role in the geomorphological evolution of the region since the Holocene period. The results obtained based on sedimentary facies analys…

Late Pleistocene palaeoenvironments in the Thar Desert (India), located at the eastern extent of the Saharo-Arabian desert belt, have fluctuated considerably as a result of the varying range and intensity of the Indian summer monsoon. Phases of widespread Pleistocene aridity are well documented in the Thar Desert, but research focusing on humid proxies is critical to examine how the region may have facilitated population expansions across souther…

A sediment core from Kukkal Lake preserves a continuous sediment record from the early-Holocene to present (9000 yr BP to present). • Distinction between the Youngest Toba Tuff and Oldest Toba Tuff from northern Sumatra based on the area density of spontaneous fission tracks in their glass shards

    Open Access•John A Westgate, Nicholas J G Pearce et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

Determination of the area density of spontaneous fission tracks (ρ s ) in glass shards of Toba tephra is a reliable way to distinguish between the Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT) and the Oldest Toba Tuff (OTT). The ρ s values for YTT, uncorrected for partial track fading, range from 70 to 181 tracks/cm 2 with a weighted mean of 108 ± 5 tracks/cm 2 , based on 15 samples. Corrected ρ s values for YTT are in the range of 77–140 tracks/cm 2 with a weighted …

The megalithic burials of southern India-a wonderfully varied set of monuments-have long needed a chronology and a context. Broadly contemporary with the Roman and Sasanian empires, these dolmens, cairns and cists have continually raised contradictions with their material contents. The authors attack the problem using luminescence applied to pottery at the site of Siruthavoor in north-east Tamilnadu. Although sharing material culture, this first …
