Uncovering the genetic pleiotropy between obesity and hypertension in Roma population
Background: Obesity and hypertension disproportionally affect Roma people. Although shared genetic determinants are assumed to influence both blood pressure (BP) and adiposity related phenotypes, their contribution to these two sets of phenotypes in Roma population remains poorly understood. Objective: This study aims to estimate the shared genetic influence between adiposity and BP traits in a high-risk population like the Roma and to assess the…
Pilot study on level 3 fingerprint features for their use in forensic identification
Background: Dermatoglyphs are formed early during prenatal development and, due to their individuality and permanence, are commonly used for identification. When fingertips touch a surface, sweat distributed along the ridges is transferred, producing a latent fingerprint. To use this latent fingerprint for identification purposes, each country establishes a well-defined minimum number of level 2 features (or minutiae). Latent fingerprints obtaine…
Association between lifestyle features and obesity phenotypes in adults from the Basque Country (Spain)
Lifestyle is related to the risk of obesity, but the relationship between different lifestyle features and obesity phenotypes remains unclear. This study analysed the association between different lifestyle features (eating habits, activity, sleep patterns, and tobacco and alcohol consumption), and four obesity phenotypes (overall and abdominal obesity, distribution and percentage of fat). The sample included 521 adults aged between 18 and 70 yea…
Joint associations of depression, genetic susceptibility and the area of residence for coronary heart disease incidence
BACKGROUND: Depression is a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), but less is known whether genetic susceptibility to CHD or regional-level social indicators modify this association. METHODS: Risk factors of CHD including a Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) were measured for 19 999 individuals residing in Finland in 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2012 (response rates 60%-75%). During the register-based follow-up until 2015, there were 1381 fatal and non-f…
Genetics of somatotype and physical fitness in children and adolescents
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the influence of genetic and environmental factors on the variation in somatotype, physical fitness, and their mutual associations. METHODS: Twins from 214 pairs (87 monozygotic) of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Portugal, from 3 to 18 years of age (51% girls) were assessed in anthropometry and physical fitness tests. We estimated endomorphy, mesomorphy, and ectomorphy based on anthropometric measures and physical fitnes…
Association between birth weight and educational attainment
BACKGROUND: There is evidence that birth weight is positively associated with education, but it remains unclear whether this association is explained by familial environmental factors, genetic factors or the intrauterine environment. We analysed the association between birth weight and educational years within twin pairs, which controls for genetic factors and the environment shared between co-twins. METHODS: The data were derived from nine twin …
Association of maternal menarcheal age with anthropometric dimensions and blood pressure in children from Greater Bilbao
Children with earlier MMA tend to have greater anthropometric dimensions. Adolescent growth spurt might affect these relationships, at least in girls
Association of paternal IQ in early adulthood with offspring mortality and hospital admissions for injuries
BACKGROUND: Higher intelligence (IQ) has been related to a lower risk of mortality and hospital admissions for injuries, but little is known about the effect of parental IQ on offspring outcomes. We explored associations of paternal IQ with mortality and hospitalisations for injuries from all external causes in offspring. METHODS: A cohort of 503 492 Swedish children under 5 years of age with information on paternal IQ was obtained by record link…
Sex of preceding sibling and anthropometrics of subsequent offspring at birth and in young adulthood
In many mammal species with sexual dimorphism producing sons is energetically more demanding to the mother than producing daughters. Although some studies in humans have suggested that offspring born after a brother have a smaller birth weight and adult height when compared with those born after a sister, little is known about this intergenerational cost of producing sons. We aimed to study whether the sex of preceding sibling is associated with …
Association of height and pubertal timing with lipoprotein subclass profile
OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the relationship between growth and lipoprotein profile. We aimed to analyze common genetic and environmental factors in the association of height from late childhood to adulthood and pubertal timing with serum lipid and lipoprotein subclass profile. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort of Finnish twin pairs (FinnTwin12) was analyzed using self-reported height at 11-12, 14, 17 years and measured stature at adult age (2…
The association between height and birth order
BACKGROUND: Birth order is associated with outcomes such as birth weight and adult socioeconomic position (SEP), but little is known about the association with adult height. This potential birth order-height association is important because height predicts health, and because the association may help explain population-level height trends. We studied the birth order-height association and whether it varies by family characteristics or birth cohor…
Heritability variations of body linearity and obesity indicators during growth
Association among Obesity-Related Anthropometric Phenotypes
Obesity has become a public-health and policy problem in many parts of the world. Epidemiological and population studies in this field are usually based on different anthropometric measures; however, common genetic and environmental factors between these phenotypes have been scarcely studied. The objective of this article is to assess the strength of these factors on the covariation among a large set of obesity-related traits. The subject group c…
Genetic and environmental influences on growth from late childhood to adulthood
Objectives: Human growth is a complex process that remains insufficiently understood. We aimed to analyze genetic and environmental influences on growth from late childhood to early adulthood. Methods: Two cohorts of monozygotic and dizygotic (same sex and opposite sex) Finnish twin pairs were studied longitudinally using self‐reported height at 11–12, 14, and 17 years and adult age (FinnTwin12) and at 16, 17, and 18years and adult age (FinnTwin1…
Quantitative genetics of human morphology and obesity-related phenotypes in nuclear families from the Greater Bilbao (Spain)
Familial correlations and heritability estimates of body morphology and composition from the Greater Bilbao sample were within the range observed in other studies. The lower heritability detected for central fat has also been found in some other populations, but further investigations in different populations using the same anthropometric traits and estimation methods are needed in order to obtain more robust conclusions
Common genetic and environmental factors among craniofacial traits in Belgian nuclear families
Contribution of Genetics and Environment to Craniofacial Anthropometric Phenotypes in Belgian Nuclear Families
In this study we estimate relative genetic and environmental influences on head-related anthropometric phenotypes. The subject group consisted of 119 nuclear families living in Brussels, Belgium, and included 238 males and 236 females, ages 17 to 72 years. Two factor analyses with varimax rotation (the first one related to facial measurements and the second one to overall head morphology) were used to analyze 14 craniofacial size traits. The resu…
