Comparison between model global AWaRe-based quality indicators and quality indicators developed to assess the appropriateness of antibiotic prescribing in primary healthcare in South Africa
Background/objectives Bacterial antimicrobial resistance represents a significant global public health challenge. Researchers from City St Georges, University of London, UK, developed global model sets of quality indicators, based on WHO AWaRe guidance, to improve future primary healthcare (PHC) prescribing. These were subsequently adapted to the PHC context in South Africa as an exemplar for developing countries. The study aimed to compare natio…
Evaluating infection prevention and control programs in Zambian hospitals using the WHO infection prevention and control assessment framework tool
Background: Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is key to preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study evaluated the implementation of IPC in Zambian hospitals. Materials and methods: We conducted a multicentric cross-sectional study in nine hospitals across Zambia using the WHO IPCAF tool. Data were collected from September 1 to 30, 2024 and analyzed using the self-scoring Exc…
Public health financing in Brazil (2019–2022)

This study aims to describe the allocation of public health resources in Brazil, both overall and across regions, based on National Health Fund (FNS) data from 2019 to 2022. The goal is to provide an understanding of the profile and distribution of resources sourced exclusively from the federal government during this…
Users’ Perspectives on Primary Care and Public Health Services in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
This study focuses on the Unified Health System (SUS) in five regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one of Brazil's most important states, as part of a comprehensive analysis of a research project, which has generated publications in earlier phases. The objective was to assess users' perceptions of SUS in terms of access to and the quality of public health services, including primary care and pharmaceutical services. A cross-sectional s…
Users’ Perceptions of Access to and Quality of Public Health Services in Brazil
A universal health system should cover diverse regions with unique needs. However, 49.4% of participants stated they never received information on how to store their medicines, and 42.3% reported never encountering a pharmacist in public pharmacies. Further ongoing studies assessing user perceptions are essential to ensure users play a central role in health decision-making, contributing to the system's strengthening and improvement
Users’ Perceptions of Access to and Quality of Unified Health System Services in Brazil
Evaluating the access to and quality of healthcare services from the users' perspective is an important assessment process to identify priorities. This study assessed the profile of health service usage and the views of the Unified Health System (SUS) users about the access to and quality of SUS public health services. A cross-sectional study was conducted with participants from the Coastal Lowlands Region of the Rio de Janeiro State/Brazil, betw…
Risk Awareness and Demographic Characteristics Associated With the Use of Sexual Enhancement Supplements Among University Staff
Sexual enhancement supplements (SESs) that have illegal additions of pharmaceuticals or analogues pose a significant health risk, particularly with long-term usage. When supplements are adulterated with phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors, dosages can vary widely and there may be an increase in adverse effects and drug–drug interactions which cannot be avoided. Consequently, there is a need to evaluate the public risk awareness toward SES…
Covid-19 vaccine uptake and associated factors among adolescents and youths
Adolescents and youths are a key part of the population that needs to be protected against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This is because they are more likely to spread the virus to vulnerable individuals. In view of these concerns, this study investigated the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines and associated factors among adolescents and youths attending secondary schools in Zambia. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 1500 school-g…
Low influenza vaccine uptake by healthcare workers caring for the elderly in South African old age homes and primary healthcare facilities
The main reasons behind low influenza vaccine uptake by HCWs in South Africa who care for the elderly were related to unavailability of the vaccine and vaccine hesitancy. Strategies to educate HCWs on the importance of influenza vaccination, while concurrently increasing sustained and easy access to the vaccine by HCWs are needed to preserve public health
Trends in the utilization of medicines sold in the private sector post- registration in South Africa and the implications for similar countries
Regulatory measures should be implemented to ensure increased medicine access post-registration for new originators, especially for priority disease areas that benefit patients. Mental health diseases and improved access to oncology medicines require special attention and further investigation in South Africa
The Current Situation Regarding Long-Acting Insulin Analogues Including Biosimilars Among African, Asian, European, and South American Countries; Findings and Implications for the Future
Background: Diabetes mellitus rates continue to rise, which coupled with increasing costs of associated complications has appreciably increased global expenditure in recent years. The risk of complications are enhanced by poor glycaemic control including hypoglycaemia. Long-acting insulin analogues were developed to reduce hypoglycaemia and improve adherence. Their considerably higher costs though have impacted their funding and use. Biosimilars …
Rapid Assessment of Price Instability and Paucity of Medicines and Protection for Covid-19 Across Asia
Background: Countries have introduced a variety of measures to prevent and treat COVID-19 with medicines and personal protective equipment (PPE), with some countries adopting preventative strategies earlier than others. However, there has been considerable controversy surrounding some treatments. This includes hydroxychloroquine where the initial hype and misinformation lead to shortages, price rises and suicides. Price rises and shortages have a…
Effectiveness of Maintenance Immunosuppression Therapies in a Matched-Pair Analysis Cohort of 16 Years of Renal Transplant in the Brazilian National Health System
The maintenance of patients with renal transplant typically involves two or more drugs to prevent rejection and prolong graft survival. The calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) are the most commonly recommended medicines in combinations with others. While immunosuppressive treatment regimens are well established, there is insufficient long-term effectiveness data to help guide future management decisions. The study analyzes the effectiveness of treatment…
