Burden of pulmonary tuberculosis among Ethiopians seeking jobs in the Middle East
This study revealed a relatively high prevalence of presumptive TB among Ethiopian (MDWs) seeking jobs in the Middle East. The X-ray results may not be confirmatory diagnosis for TB. Therefore, further investigation is required using other confirmatory methods such as Gene Xpert or TB culture. Linking medically unfit individuals to TB care is crucial to mitigate transmission risks based on the WHO recommendations
Whole-genome sequencing-based genetic diversity, transmission dynamics, and drug-resistant mutations in Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from extrapulmonary tuberculosis patients in western Ethiopi…
Background: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) refers to a form of Tuberculosis (TB) where the infection occurs outside the lungs. Despite EPTB being a devastating disease of public health concern, it is frequently overlooked as a public health problem. This study aimed to investigate genetic diversity, identify drug-resistance mutations, and trace ongoing transmission chains. Methods: (MTB) samples obtained from EPTB patients. Out of the 96 geno…
Prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis in homeless individuals in the Addis Ababa City, Ethiopia
Background Homeless individuals are at a high risk of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) as compared to the general population. The number of homeless individuals has been increasing in Addis Ababa City during the last three decades due to the migration of rural inhabitants to the City for better living conditions. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and evaluate asso…
Drug sensitivity of clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its association with bacterial genotype in the Somali region, Eastern Ethiopia
Background Drug resistance is becoming a major bottleneck for tuberculosis (TB) control programs in countries with high TB burdens. Although several studies were conducted on the drug sensitivity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( M. tuberculosis ) in central Ethiopia, there is a lack of data on the drug sensitivity of M. tuberculosis in the peripheral regions of the country including in the Somali region. Therefore, the objective of this study was …
Spoligotyping of Clinical Isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex Species in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia
Background Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia. Investigation of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) species circulating in the Ethiopian population would contribute to the efforts made to control TB in the country. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the MTBC species and spoligo patterns in the Oromia region (central) of Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study design was used to …
Milk and meat consumption patterns and the potential risk of zoonotic disease transmission among urban and peri-urban dairy farmers in Ethiopia
Creating awareness about the risk factors for zoonotic transmission of diseases through training and media campaigns, improving meat hygiene through better abattoir services, and inducing behavioural change around meat sourcing, raw meat and raw milk consumption, are all crucial to the successful prevention and control of the spread of zoonotic diseases, including bTB
Tuberculosis knowledge and attitude among non-health science university students needs attention
The present study revealed that non-health science university students lack important TB knowledge and have misconceptions about TB in eastern Ethiopia. University administrators and other stakeholders striving against TB should provide due attention to university settings and consider development of student education programs to improve awareness and knowledge of TB disease
Latent tuberculosis infection and associated risk indicators in pastoral communities in southern Ethiopia
A high prevalence of LTBI in the South Omo Zone raises the concern that elimination of TB in the pastoral communities of the region might be difficult. Screening for and testing individuals infected with TB, independent of symptoms, may be an effective way to minimize the risk of disease spread
Prevalence and drug resistance profile of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from pulmonary tuberculosis patients attending two public hospitals in East Gojjam zone, northwest Ethiopia
In general, the magnitude of anti-TB drug resistance including MDR-TB was comparable to previous studies in other areas of Ethiopia. However, rifampicin resistance was high, which could suggest the potential for a rise in the incidence of MDR. Therefore, re-enforcing TB control programs should be considered by the concerned public health authorities
Molecular typing and drug sensitivity testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated by a community-based survey in Ethiopia
In this study, the strains of M. tuberculosis circulating in selected sites of Ethiopia were identified along with the drug sensitivity patterns. Thus, these findings are useful for the TB Control Program of the country
Determinants of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in patients who underwent first-line treatment in Addis Ababa
Patients who were not in strict DOTS programs and did not adhere to first-line TB treatment and patients who experienced side effects during first-line treatment and Category II retreatment were at significantly increased risk of developing MDR-TB. The DOTS program should, therefore, be strengthened to increase patient adherence. Drug-susceptibility testing is also highly recommended for all Category I treatment regimen failures before those pati…
Diagnostic and treatment delay among Tuberculosis patients in Afar Region, Ethiopia
There is a long delay in the diagnosis and initiation of treatment and this was mainly attributable to the health system. Health system strengthening towards improved diagnosis of TB could reduce the long health system's delay in the management of TB in the study area
Knowledge of cervical tuberculosis lymphadenitis and its treatment in pastoral communities of the Afar region, Ethiopia
The pastoral community members in the study areas had little biomedical knowledge of the cause, the source of infection and the transmission route of cervical TBL. Furthermore, most community members believed that herbal medicines are the most effective treatment for TBL. Therefore, TB control programs in the Afar Region require the incorporation of public health education introducing current biomedical knowledge of the disease. In addition, furt…
Knowledge and perception of pulmonary tuberculosis in pastoral communities in the middle and Lower Awash Valley of Afar region, Ethiopia
Afar pastoralists live in the northeast of Ethiopia, confined to the most arid part of the country, where there is least access to educational, health and other social services. Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major public health problems in Afar region. Lack of knowledge about TB could affect the health-seeking behaviour of patients and sustain the transmission of the disease within the community. In this study, we assessed the knowledge and per…
