Open Access•Opeayo Ogundiran, Jessica L Abbate et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

During a public health emergency, early implementation of response activities is crucial for saving lives and protecting livelihoods. The COVID-19 pandemic, declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020, posed a global public health crisis that required timely decision-making despite limited data and capacity. • Evaluation of the epidemic intelligence from open sources (Eios) system for the early detection of outbreaks and health emergencies in the African region

Open Access•George Sie Williams, Etien Luc Koua et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

We conclude that the EIOS system performed well in detecting public health events in the African region early. However, some improvements are needed. We recommend increasing social media and local community radio sources on the EIOS system

  • Evaluation of integrated disease surveillance and response (IDSR) core and support functions after the revitalisation of IDSR in Uganda from 2012 to 2016

Open Access•Ben Masiira, Lydia Nakiire et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The revitalised IDSR programme in Uganda was associated with improvements in performance. However in 2016, the programme still faced significant challenges and some performance indicators were still below the target. It is important that the documented gains are consolidated and challenges are continuously identified and addressed as they emerge

  • The design and implementation of the re-vitalised integrated disease surveillance and response (IDSR) in Uganda, 2013–2016

Open Access•Christine Kihembo, Ben Masiira et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

The IDSR re-vitalization in Uganda highlights unique features that can be considered by other countries that would wish to strengthen their IDSR programs. Through a coordinated partner response, the program harnessed resources which primarily were not earmarked for IDSR to strengthen the program nation-wide. Engagement of the local district leadership helped promote ownership, foster accountability and sustainability of the program

  • Assessment of core capacities for the International Health Regulations (IHR[2005]) – Uganda, 2009

Open Access•Joseph Francis Wamala, Charles Okot et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The assessment highlighted critical gaps to guide the IHR(2005) planning process. The IHR(2005) action plan should therefore be developed to foster national and international public health security
