  • Implementing the 7-1-7 target to improve epidemic preparedness and response in Uganda

Open Access•Lydia Nakiire, Aaron F Bochner et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

Early and effective response actions are vital to mitigate outbreaks and other public health events. The 7-1-7 target (7 days to detect, 1 day to notify and 7 days to complete early response actions) is a performance improvement approach for epidemic preparedness. 7-1-7 data were collected by rapid response teams and presented to stakeholders at National Task Force (NTF) meetings, Uganda’s primary outbreak coordination platform, in the days immed…

  • Improving maternal and neonatal outcomes among pregnant women who are HIV-positive or HIV-negative through the Saving Mothers Giving Life initiative in Uganda

Open Access•Maureen Nabatanzi, Julie R Harris et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

HIV infection is associated with poor maternal health outcomes. In 2016, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Uganda was 336/100,000, and the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) was 19/1,000. Saving Mothers, Giving Life (SMGL) was a five-year maternal and neonatal health strengthening initiative launched in 2012 in Uganda. We extracted maternal and neonatal data for 2015–2016 from the initiative’s population-based mortality surveillance system in 123 …

  • Contribution of the one health approach to strengthening health security in Uganda

Open Access•Herbert Bakiika, Ekwaro A Obuku et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

This study demonstrates the contribution of 'One Health' implementation in strengthening Uganda's health security. Investment in the funding gaps will reinforce Uganda's health security to achieve the IHR 2005. Future studies could examine the impacts and cost-effectiveness of One Health in curbing prioritized zoonotic disease outbreaks

  • Covid-19 and the law in Uganda

Open Access•Martha Isabella Achan, Immaculate Nabukenya et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Countries can enact supportive legislation within the course of an outbreak. The balance of enforcing public health interventions and human rights infringements is an important consideration in future. We recommend public sensitization about legislative provisions and reforms to guide public health responses in future outbreaks or pandemics

  • Large outbreak of Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium) poisoning due to consumption of contaminated humanitarian relief food

Open Access•Ronald R Mutebi, Alex Riolexus Ario et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

This was the largest documented outbreak caused by food contamination with tropane alkaloids. Implicated food was immediately withdrawn. Routine food safety and quality checks could prevent future outbreaks

  • Malaria outbreak facilitated by increased mosquito breeding sites near houses and cessation of indoor residual spraying, Kole district, Uganda, January-June 2019

Open Access•Maureen Nabatanzi, Vivian Ntono et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Stagnant water formed by increased rainfall likely provided increased breeding sites that drove this outbreak. Cessation of IRS preceded the malaria upsurges. We recommend re-introduction of IRS and removal of mosquito breeding sites in Kole District
