Understanding drivers of neonatal mortality in Zimbabwe
In Zimbabwe, the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) is higher than the regional average, and the country is not on track to reach the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing the NMR by 2030. While other child mortality indicators have improved, NMR has increased. Using machine learning, we aimed to identify the key predictors of neonatal mortality in Zimbabwe. Pooled secondary data analysis of three rounds of the Zimbabwe Demographic Health Survey (Z…
The impact of US Government Stop Work Order on HIV epidemic trajectory in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is highly dependent on United States Government (USG) funding for the HIV Response, where 42% of the HIV expenditures in 2020 were financed by the USG and in 2023, PEPFAR invested more than $200 million to support HIV programmes. In late January 2025, the USG issued a “Stop Work Order,” suspending funding for international aid and development during a 90-day review period and this was expected to have a significant negative impact on the…
A decade of designing and implementing electronic health records in Sub-Saharan Africa
Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems offer extensive opportunities to enhance healthcare delivery in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries by improving data management and patient care and reducing errors. Nonetheless, EHR systems face a myriad of challenges, ranging from infrastructure and resources to policy, data management, and implementers' capacitation. This review provides a comprehensive 10-year overview of EHR implementation in the SSA …
HIV incidence and prevalence projections for Zimbabwe
Introduction : Understanding how HIV epidemics are likely to behave in the future is key to informing HIV response strategies in low-income countries. Up-to-date HIV epidemiological estimates are important for policy decision- making, but surveillance data can be out of date. This study compared forecasts from HIV epidemiological models. Methods : Five independent modelling groups (EMOD-HIV, Goals, HIV Synthesis, Optima and PopART-IBM) calibrated…
Maternal, Sexual and Reproductive Health in Marginalised Areas
The COVID-19 pandemic and resultant lockdowns have brought unprecedented challenges for Maternal, Sexual and Reproductive Health (MSRH) services. Components of MSRH services adversely affected include antenatal, postnatal, and newborn care; provision of family planning and post-abortion care services; sexual and gender-based violence care and prevention; and care and treatment for sexually transmitted infections including HIV. Resuscitating, remo…
Investigation of an anthrax outbreak in Makoni District, Zimbabwe
The described anthrax outbreak was caused due to contact with infected cattle meat. Although the outbreak was eventually controlled through cattle vaccination and health education and awareness campaigns, the response of the district office was initially delayed and insufficient. The district should strengthen its emergency preparedness and response capacity, revive zoonotic committees, conduct awareness campaigns and improve surveillance, especi…
