Finding the balance between academic productivity and impact
INTRODUCTION: There is consensus that global health needs a new power and incentive structure and academia must benefit society more directly. However, there are few metrics to help academic global health partnerships enact these changes. This study evaluates the impact of the Botswana - University of Pennsylvania Partnership (BUP) between July 2018 and June 2023, through the lenses of academic productivity, global health decolonisation and social…
Integrated epidemiologic investigation and genomic confirmation of a Klebsiella pneumoniae neonatal sepsis outbreak in Botswana
Klebsiella pneumoniae ( Kpn ) is a major cause of infant mortality worldwide, with most transmission occurring among hospitalized neonates in low- and middle-income countries where infections caused by multidrug-resistant Kpn (MDR- Kpn ) are increasingly common. We hypothesized that integrating laboratory surveillance for neonatal colonization and infection, real-time epidemiologic investigations, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) could identify …
Admission screening for extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales colonization at a referral hospital in Botswana
Extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales (ESCrE) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) are significant contributors to infection-related mortality in low- and middle-income countries. Colonization with ESCrE and/or CRE can precede infection and serve as a reservoir for transmission within healthcare facilities and the community. We conducted a 12-month period-prevalence study, screening patients for ESCrE and CRE upon a…
Patients' request for and emergency physicians' prescription of antimicrobial prophylaxis for anthrax during the 2001 bioterrorism-related outbreak
During the 2001 bioterrorist attacks, the majority of the emergency physicians we surveyed encountered patients who requested anthrax prophylaxis. Public fears may lead to a high demand for antibiotic prophylaxis during bioterrorism events. Elucidation of the relationship between public health response to outbreaks and outcomes would yield insights to ease burden on frontline clinicians and guide strategies to control inappropriate antibiotic all…
