  • Changes in the prevalence of the common risk factors for non-communicable diseases in Uganda between 2014 and 2023

Open Access•Ronald Kusolo, Gerald Mutungi et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) remain the biggest contributor to global mortality. An important way to control NCDs is to focus on reducing the prevalence of the common NCD risk factors for better NCD prevention planning. Uganda conducted its first nationally representative NCD risk factor survey in 2014, and a second in 2023. We analyzed the prevalence of the common NCD risk factors to assess changes in these between 2014 and 2023. Both survey…

  • Psychosocial Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic Among Omanis with Multiple Sclerosis

Open Access•Jihad Yaqoob Ali Al Kharbooshi, Abdullah Al‐Asmi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

    (1) Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) in Oman, necessitating targeted healthcare planning and patient support. This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on MS management and disease course, incidence, and outcomes of COVID-19, psychosocial and mental health effects of the pandemic, and demographic and clinical predictors of the effects related to COVID-19 am…

  • Predictors of disaster response self-efficacy among nurses in Oman

Open Access•Leodoro J Labrague, Joy Kabasindi Kamanyire et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2021

  • Associations between environmental covariates and temporal changes in malaria incidence in high transmission settings of Uganda

Open Access•Jaffer Okiring, Isobel Routledge et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

In high-malaria transmission settings, high values of environmental covariates were associated with increased cumulative IRR of malaria, with IRR peaks at variable lag times. The complex associations identified are valuable for designing strategies for early warning, prevention, and control of seasonal malaria surges and epidemics

  • Healthcare delivery for paediatric and adolescent diabetes in low resource settings

Open Access•Silver Bahendeka, Gerald Mutungi et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2019

The management of type 1 diabetes (T1DM) includes setting up organised follow-up clinics. A programme for establishing such clinics in Uganda commenced in 2009. The clinics were established along the chronic care model and were integrated into the health structure of other chronic diseases. Web-based electronic medical records were utilised to establish a centralised registry. All children with diabetes below 18 years of age were encouraged to en…

  • Alcohol use among adults in Uganda

Open Access•Steven Ndugwa Kabwama, Sheila Ndyanabangi et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2016

BACKGROUND: There are limited data on levels of alcohol use in most sub-Saharan African countries. OBJECTIVE: We analyzed data from Uganda's non-communicable diseases risk factor survey conducted in 2014, to identify alcohol use prevalence and associated factors. DESIGN: The survey used the World Health Organization STEPS tool to collect data, including the history of alcohol use. Alcohol users were categorized into low-, medium-, and high-end us…

  • Burden of cumulative risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases among adults in Uganda

Open Access•Ronald Wesonga, D Guwatudde et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2016

The non-communicable disease burden is on the increase, with more participants reporting to have at least two risk factors. Our findings imply that, besides endogenous factors, exogenous factors such as region, residence status, land tenure system and behavioral characteristics have significant causal effects on the cumulative NCD risk factors. Subsequently, while developing interventions to combat cumulative risk factors of NCDs, the Ministry of…

  • Health and human rights

Open Access•Ronald Wesonga, Abraham Owino et al.•ARTICLE•BMC International Health and…•2015

BACKGROUND: Health is intertwined with human rights as is clearly reflected in the right to life. Promotion of health practices in the context of human rights can be accomplished if there is a better understanding of the level of human rights observance. In this paper, we evaluate and present an appraisal for a possibility of applying household survey to study the determinants of health and human rights and also derive the probability that human …
