Understanding youth engagement in cocoa farming
We investigated the motivations of youth in Cameroon to engage in cocoa farming, their challenges, their participation in agricultural programmes, their access to services and their performance, and the factors influencing these. A quantitative approach focused on young cocoa farmers, beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of the New Generation Programme was used. We surveyed 309 young cocoa farmers selected through a multi-stage stratified sampling…
Beyond imperfect maps
Not all good intentions lead to effective and fair policy designs, as their implementation creates new problems. The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) may be an example. In targeting ‘deforestation‐free’ trade, it forces a complex social–ecological reality into an oversimplified forest–non‐forest representation. The forest definition used refers to tree cover but excludes farmer‐managed agroforestry (AF). Not all tree cover indicates…
Oil palm production, instrumental and relational values
Pre-certification conditions of independent oil palm smallholders in Indonesia. Assessing prospects for RSPO certification
Smallholders, who cultivate ±30% of the global palm oil land, are critical to the realization of a sustainable palm oil sector. However, particularly independent smallholders, untied to mills, lag behind in yields and experience challenges to market their produce. Sustainability certification, such as by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), is proposed as a way to improve smallholder livelihoods, while protecting the environment. Howeve…
Climate-smart cocoa in forest landscapes
Integrated landscape approaches have been welcomed by scientists and development practitioners as a promising way to address commodity-driven deforestation and associated land degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. They present cross-sectoral approaches to manage trade-offs between multiple land uses and environmental and socio-economic objectives through participatory multi-stakeholder planning and negotiation processes. The success of landsc…
Growing cotton to produce food
Justice and Inclusiveness
Pressure from the public and non-governmental organisations is pushing lead companies in the cocoa and chocolate sectors towards becoming more environmentally sustainable and socially just. Because of this, several sustainability programmes, certification schemes and delivery initiatives have been introduced. These have changed the relationship between chocolate companies, cocoa exporters, and small-scale farmers. This paper observes how large co…
The adoption problem is a matter of fit
Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) are central to sustainability standards and certification programmes in the global cocoa chain. Pruning is one of the practices promoted in extension services associated with these sustainability efforts. Yet concerns exist about the low adoption rate of these GAPs by smallholder cocoa farmers in Ghana. A common approach to addressing this challenge is based on creating enabling conditions and offering appropria…
Independent oil palm smallholder management practices and yields
Smallholders are a substantial part of the oil palm sector and thus are key to achieving more sustainable production. However, so far their yields remain below potential. The Roundtable on Sustainable Oil Palm (RSPO) aims to include smallholders in sustainability certification to strengthen rural livelihoods and reduce negative environmental impacts. This study aims to determine if and how certified smallholders perform differently from their non…

Multinationals and Modernisation of Domestic Value Chains in Africa
Multinationals can facilitate modernisation in food value chains in developing countries. While most studies focus on export chains, insight on domestic food chains is scant. Our study aims to provide detailed insights into the process of upgrading domestic value chains. A rapidly growing beer market has attracted foreign brewery companies to invest in Ethiopia. These foreign brewers have introduced new sourcing structures in order to increase th…
Farmers’ Perceptions as a Driver of Agricultural Practices
In Africa, cocoa yields are low, partly due to soil fertility constraints and poor management. While peoples’ knowledge, aspirations, and abilities are key factors explaining their behaviour, little is known about the rationales that underpin soil fertility management practices (SFMPs) of cocoa farmers. To address this gap, we conducted an exploratory survey in two contrasting regions in Cameroon where cocoa is an important crop: the humid forest…

Agricultural land use change and associated driving forces over the past 180 years in two municipalities of the Brazilian Cerrado
Fundamentals of Sustainable Development
The impact of development needs to be considered beyond the narrow focus of economic, ecological or social concerns. This new and expanded edition builds upon the first edition’s accessible and comprehensive overview of the challenges linked to striving for a sustainable, holistic approach to development. Providing a multifaceted approach to the subject in order to encompass what is referred to as ‘people, planet and profit’, this second edition …

Biofuel, dairy production and beef in Brazil
This paper examines the competing claims on land use resulting from the expansion of biofuel production. Sugarcane for biofuel drives agrarian change in So Paulo state, which has become the major ethanol-producing region in Brazil. We analyse how the expansion of sugarcane-based ethanol in So Paulo state has impacted dairy and beef production. Historical changes in land use, production technologies, and product and land prices are described, as w…
