Rika Tsushima, Martin Guardado•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Identity &…•2019

This article examines the development of Japanese as a heritage language (HL) in linguistically mixed families. The article, part of a larger study, is based on semi-structured interviews with Japanese-descent mothers living in Montreal, Canada, which sought to investigate t…

  • Extending the heritage language classroom

Valeria Palladino, Martin Guardado•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•2017•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 5

Research suggests that online support can enhance formal learning experiences. Access to tools such as wikis and blogs is relatively easy, free, and intuitive, even for beginner users, making these tools appealing to heritage language (HL) teachers whose access to resources is often limited. Given that little research has investigated how these tools affect learning in community HL schools, this paper examines the experiences of teachers and stud…

This article, part of a larger study, examines three middle-class, Hispanic Canadian families' conceptualizations of language, culture, and identity. Via an analysis of interview data, the findings indicate that the parents assigned diverse meanings to heritage language development (HLD) and held high expectations for their children's formation of adaptable identities as a result of their bilingualism and multilingualism. They constructed HLD as …

    Martin Guardado•ARTICLE•Canadian ethnic studies•2008•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 1

There exists a wealth of research in the areas of heritage languages in the United States. Over the last two decades, the rapidly growing work on Spanish, particularly, is making important strides in the understanding of this research area. Yet, there is only minimal work focusing specifically on language socialization and Spanish maintenance in Canada. In this article, I describe qualitative research examining the contextual factors of the lingu…
