Am 17. Juli 1968, vor 27 Jahren also, hatte ich die Ehre, in diesem Hause vor der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Forschung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, der Vorläuferin der heutigen Akademie der Wissenschaften, über meine ersten „Ergebnisse völkerkundlicher Forschungen bei den Bulsa in Nord-Ghana 1966/67“ zu berichten. Dieser Vortrag erschien 1970 unter dem Obertitel: „Aus Leben und Dichtung eines westafrikanischen Bauernvolkes“

Formen und Funktionen mündlicher Traditionen bei den Bulsa in Nordghana
Mit meinen ghanaischen und deutschen Mitarbeitern konnte ich dank der Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft in den Jahren 1966 bis 1989 während insgesamt etwa 21 Monaten ethnographischer Feldforschungen ein Korpus von mehr als 1.200 Erzählungen bei den Bulsa in Nordghana aufnehmen. Die Bulsa, ein Volk von etwa 70.000 Menschen, leben in der Trockensavanne von ihrer traditionellen Landwirtschaft — dem Anbau verschiedener Hirsesorten un…

In October 1974 I attended a court session in Sandema, capital of the Bulsa District in the Upper Region of Ghana. 1 Before the Paramount Chief of the Bulsa, Mr. Azantinlow, had appeared two men from Kanjaga, another Bulsa village. One of them complained that some of his donkeys had gone astray and had been illegally appropriated by his neighbour. The latter denied these charges, stating that the donkeys in his compound were his own and not ident…
