Primary Flaking Strategies of the Late Upper Palaeolithic industry with scalene triangles of the Northern Tien Shan
This paper presents the first results of a technological analysis of the lithic industry from cultural layer 4/3 of the multilayer Upper Palaeolithic site of Rakhat (Northern Tien Shan, south-eastern Kazakhstan). Layer 4/3 belongs to a group of cultural deposits dating to the early part of the late Upper Palaeolithic (~20,300–19,300 14C yr BP) that are characterised by the early presence of scalene triangles. Taphonomic and spatial analysis show …

Early Upper Paleolithic industries of the Northern Tien Shan foothills
The article provides an overview of the Early Upper Paleolithic (EUP) of a poorly studied region - the foothills of the Northern Tien Shan (Central Asia, Kazakhstan). New data on the chronology of the EUP sites are presented, issues of preliminary periodization and cultural attribution of lithic industries are discussed. Until recently, only one site with Upper Paleolithic materials was known in the region (Northwestern Tien Shan) - the Ch.Ch. Va…
Finds of Perforated and Colored Shells of the Genus Corbicula from the Upper Palaeolithic Site Rakhat (Northern Tien Shan, Kazakhstan)
The article examines a collection of perforated shells of freshwater bivalve mollusks Corbicula from cultural layers 2 and 3 of the Upper Palaeolithic site of Rakhat. The Rakhat site was discovered in 2006, and excavations have been in progress since 2018. The site is located in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau (Northern Tien Shan, Kazakhstan). The site contains 16 cultural layers dating back to ~28,000-19,000 uncal BP (~31000-23000 cal BP).…

A Complex of Stratifi ed Upper Paleolithic Sites in the Foothills of the Northern Tien Shan
This article examines the key cultural trends and events in the evolution of the Upper Paleolithic in the foothills of the Northern Tien Shan (Zailisky Alatau, Kazakhstan). It outlines the history of Paleolithic studies in southeastern Kazakhstan. We describe the geographic characteristics of the region, the geomorphological positions of sites, and features of sedimentation that infl uenced the preservation of cultural remains in situ. Archaeolog…

A Complex of Stratified Upper Paleolithic Sites in the Foothills of the Northern Tien Shan

Problems of the Upper Paleolithic in the foothills of the Northern Tien Shan
Introduction. This work is devoted to the assessment of the Upper Paleolithic sites of the Northern Tien Shan. Materials and methods. Plains and foothills of Kazakhstan occupies a large western part of Central Asia and stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to the Altai Mountains in the east. There are many Paleolithic sites, the vast majority of which are open-air (surface) sites. Recently several multilayer Upper Paleolithic sites have been…
The Initial Stages of the Early Upper Palaeolithic in the Foothills of the Northern Tien Shan, Kazakhstan (Based on the Materials from the Multilayered Maibulak Site)
The Upper Palaeolithic of the western Central Asia remains poorly understood. On the vast plains and mountainous territories, few sites of this age are known. In this regard, new sites discovered in the contact zone of the steppe and mountain belts of the Northern Tien Shan (Kazakhstan) acquire particular significance. Favorable natural conditions contributed to the active settlement of this territory, and the features of loess sedimentation cont…
