  • Financing education

Maria Ron Balsera, Steven J Klees et al.•ARTICLE•Compare A Journal of Comparative…•2017•Citada por: 7

This forum seeks to problematise issues related to the lack of resources to adequately finance public education systems. It explores potential solutions based on increased domestic resource mobilisation through progressive taxation in order to meet the growing financing gap needed to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4. While many governments in poor countries are already demonstrating a strong commitment to funding education, the papers…

  • The role of small villages in Northern Tsimshian territory from oral and archaeological records

Open Access•Andrew Martindale, Susan Marsden et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Archaeology•2017•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 29

Small villages have been central to progressive models of hunter-gatherer-fisher complexity on the Northwest Coast as a stage in the narrative of increasingly nonegalitarian social relations. We argue that Tsimshian settlement history is more complicated. We examine settlement and chronological data for 66 village sites in the Tsimshian area, 22 of which we define as small. Small villages were present in the area as early as 6500 years ago, but t…

  • Genomic evidence for the Pleistocene and recent population history of Native Americans

Open Access•Maanasa Raghavan, Matthias Steinrücken et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2015

Genetic history of Native Americans Several theories have been put forth as to the origin and timing of when Native American ancestors entered the Americas. To clarify this controversy, Raghavan et al. examined the genomic variation among ancient and modern individuals from Asia and the Americas. There is no evidence for multiple waves of entry or recurrent gene flow with Asians in northern populations. The earliest migrations occurred no earlier…

Dane Archer, David R Archer et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2010•Citada por: 3

This short contribution provides a brief history, touching on some of the key trends and turning points in ActionAid's education work, and it documents the evolution of the relationship between ActionAid and governments. The story of ActionAid is illustrative in many ways of wider changes in the NGO sector since the early 1970s

  • Atmospheric Lifetime of Fossil Fuel Carbon Dioxide

Dane Archer, David Archer et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Earth and…•2009

CO 2 released from combustion of fossil fuels equilibrates among the various carbon reservoirs of the atmosphere, the ocean, and the terrestrial biosphere on timescales of a few centuries. However, a sizeable fraction of the CO 2 remains in the atmosphere, awaiting a return to the solid earth by much slower weathering processes and deposition of CaCO 3 . Common measures of the atmospheric lifetime of CO 2 , including the e-folding time scale, dis…

This 1993 volume brings together critical analysis of the phenomenon called interpersonal expectation - a sub-area of social psychology that studies how the expectations of one person affects the behavior of another in an interactive setting. The book is divided into three major sections: the first examines real-world applications of research on interpersonal expectations, such as in the courtroom, classroom, and operating room; the second consid…

Dane Archer, Lynn Erlich-Erfer•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1991•Citada por: 2

This is an archival study of fear and fearful behavior. In 1973, a single county in California was beset by a dramatic epidemic of homicide. We examine two archival indictors of fear: handgun purchases and hitchhiking. We use these indictors to study the distribution of fear in time, place, and the social order. The results show that archival data can be used to reconstruct emotional responses to fearful events, that community fear peaks after th…

  • Violent Acts and Violent Times

    Dane Archer, Rosemary Gartner•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1976•Citada por: 50•Referencias: 4

The idea that waging war might increase the level of domestic violence in warring societies has occurred to many researchers. Discussions of this possibility have been limited to a very small number of case studies--often as limited as the experience of a single nation in a single war. A major obstacle to the general investigation of this question has been the unavailability of comparative data on homicide rates. Over a three-year period, a Compa…
