  • The Principles of Experimental Design and Their Application in Sociology

    Michelle Jackson, D R Cox•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2013•Citada por: 44•Referencias: 35

In light of an increasing interest in experimental work, we provide a review of some of the general issues involved in the design of experiments and illustrate their relevance to sociology and to other areas of social science of interest to sociologists. We provide both an introduction to the principles of experimental design and examples of influential applications of design for different types of social science research. Our aim is twofold: to …

  • On class differentials in educational attainment

Open Access•Robert S Erikson, Robert Erikson et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2005

Social class differentials in educational attainment have been extensively studied in numerous countries. In this paper, we begin by examining class differentials in the progression to higher secondary education among 16-year-old children in England and Wales. As has been shown for other countries, the differentials result both from the primary effects of differing levels of academic performance of children of different class background and from …

  • Some Statistical Aspects of Causality

    D R Cox•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2001•Citada por: 3

A general review of approaches to causality is given from a statistical perspective.

  • Exercise training in healthy type A middle-aged men

    James A Blumenthal, Charles F Emery et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1988

Thirty-six healthy Type A men (means = 44.4 years) were randomly assigned to either an aerobic exercise training group or a strength and flexibility training group. Subjects completed a comprehensive psychological assessment battery before and after the exercise programs consisting of behavioral, psychometric, and psychophysiological testing. The behavioral assessment consisted of repeated Type A interviews that were videotaped for subsequent com…

  • Partial likelihood

    D R Cox•ARTICLE•Biometrika•1975

A definition is given of partial likelihood generalizing the ideas of conditional and marginal likelihood. Applications include life tables and inference in stochastic processes. It is shown that the usual large-sample properties of maximum likelihood estimates and tests apply when partial likelihood is used.

  • Regression Models and Life-Tables

    Open Access•D R Cox•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Statistical…•1972

The analysis of censored failure times is considered. It is assumed that on each individual are available values of one or more explanatory variables. The hazard function (age-specific failure rate) is taken to be a function of the explanatory variables and unknown regression coefficients multiplied by an arbitrary and unknown function of time. A conditional likelihood is obtained, leading to inferences about the unknown regression coefficients. …

    Open Access•D R Cox, P A W Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Population•1970

  • The Regression Analysis of Binary Sequences

    Open Access•D R Cox•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Statistical…•1958

A sequence of 0’s and 1’s is observed and it is suspected that the chance that a particular trial is a 1 depends on the value of one or more independent variables. Tests and estimates for such situations are considered, dealing first with problems in which the independent variable is preassigned and then with independent variables that are functions of the sequence. There is a considerable amount of earlier work, which is reviewed.
