The Effects of Osteoarthritis on Depressive Symptomatology Among Older U.S. Military Veterans
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability among older adults. By 2050, approximately 60 million will suffer from arthritis adding up to a total societal cost of $65 billion. Chronic illnesses resulting in pain, and functional decline have been associated with depression in previous studies. A causal model was developed and tested using structural equation modeling that examined depression scores of 503 older (age 50-85), male Veterans …

Accelerometer-Monitored Sedentary Behavior and Observed Physical Function Loss
Objectives. We examined whether objectively measured sedentary behavior is related to subsequent functional loss among community-dwelling adults with or at high risk for knee osteoarthritis. Methods. We analyzed longitudinal data (2008–2012) from 1659 Osteoarthritis Initiative participants aged 49 to 83 years in 4 cities. Baseline sedentary time was assessed by accelerometer monitoring. Functional loss (gait speed and chair stand testing) was reg…
Perceived Racial Discrimination in Health Care and Race Differences in Physician Trust
Impact of Perceived Discrimination in Healthcare on Patient-Provider Communication
BACKGROUND: The impact of patients' perceptions of discrimination in healthcare on patient-provider interactions is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine association of past perceived discrimination with subsequent patient-provider communication. RESEARCH DESIGN: Observational cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: African-American (N=100) and white (N=253) patients treated for osteoarthritis by orthopedic surgeons (N=63) in 2 Veterans Affairs facilities. MEA…
Investigating Racial Differences in Coping with Chronic Osteoarthritis Pain
Self-Care and Professionally Guided Care in Osteoarthritis
Older White and African American persons made similar use of self-care strategies to reduce disease morbidity. African Americans without access to prescription pain relievers substituted nonprescription analgesics. A broader view of self-management is valuable for assessing the ways people may move between professionally guided care and self-care
Factors Associated With Patients Who Leave Acute-Care Hospitals Against Medical Advice
Objectives. We examined hospital- and patient-related factors associated with discharge against medical advice (termed self-discharge) after emergency admission to acute-care hospitals. Methods. We analyzed data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project using logistic regression models to assess the relationship between self-discharge and a set of patient and hospital characteristics. Results. Of 3 039 05…
Ethnic Differences in the Perception of Prayer and Consideration of Joint Arthroplasty
CONTEXT: Ethnic differences in utilization of arthroplasty may reflect differences in health-related attitudes and beliefs. OBJECTIVE: To examine ethnic differences in the perception and use of prayer in the treatment of arthritis and its role in patients' decision making toward surgery. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey. SETTING: VA Primary Care Clinics. PATIENTS: Patients older than 50 years with chronic moderate-to-severe knee pain, hip pain, o…
Understanding Ethnic Differences in the Utilization of Joint Replacement for Osteoarthritis
BACKGROUND: There is a marked difference between black patients and white patients in the utilization of joint replacement therapy. The reasons behind this disparity remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine how black and white potential candidates for joint replacement compare with respect to their overall familiarity with joint replacement as an option, as well as their perceptions of the risks/benefits of this procedure. METHODS: Cross-sectional …
