  • Caleta Huelén-42

  • Bofedales as relational spaces

    Open Access•Barbara M García, Adrián Oyaneder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Archaeology•2026•Referencias: 23

Various factors have contributed to conceptualizing the altiplano as an “extreme” and hostile upland environment, where niche lifeways such as camelid herding are part of the limited human presence. Consequently, Andean herders are often portrayed as merely exploiting the ostensibly self-sustaining altiplano pastures and peatlands. This viewpoint is reinforced by the low visibility of material culture associated with and derived from pastoralist …

  • Long-term occupation of bofedales ecosystems by high-Andean hunter-gatherers in the Dry Puna, northern Chile

Open Access•Luca Sitzia, Daniela Osorio et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

This project employs a geoarchaeological approach to explore human occupation of the highland wetlands (bofedales) and salt flats of the Dry Puna of northern Chile (>2500m above sea level) during the Holocene. Differences in the archaeological record of each ecosystem are tentatively suggested to relate to settlement patterns and the history of the landscape

  • Geomorphology of the Caracota Valley, Western Altiplano, Northern Chile

Open Access•Jan-Christoph Otto, Matias Gallardo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

We present a detailed geomorphological characterisation of the Caracota Valley (18°49′S 69°11′W, 4200–4600 m) in the western Altiplano of Northern Chile. A complex pattern of Pleistocene and Early Holocene glacier activity is responsible for the today's landscape configuration. Wetlands and temporary lakes significantly characterise the Caracota Valley setting providing water sources and storage required for life in this semi-arid landscape. Non-…

  • Remains of fill and floor? contextual taphonomy in a semi-subterranean structure in the hyperarid coast of the Atacama Desert, Chile

    Open Access•Sebastián Yrarrázaval, X Power et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 30

Architectural features and shell-matrix sites are one of the most challenging records for archaeological interpretation, due to their intricate stratification and complex depositional paths. In the hyperarid coast of the Atacama Desert, hunter-gatherer-fisher developed standardized stone-built architectural features mostly built on or directly related to shell-matrix deposits during the Late Archaic period (5700 – 4000 cal. years B.P.). These str…

  • South American geoarchaeology

    Open Access•Luca Sitzia, Paula C Ugalde et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Referencias: 22

In this special issue, articles include research from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay, plus a special paper from the United States of America. Several of the articles are from Chilean scientists and/or focus on Chilean geoarchaeology and are intended to reflect the spirit of the symposium carried out during the Congreso Nacional de Arqueología Chilena 2018 (National Chilean Archaeology Conference). • Ritual stone‐built architecture and shell midden foundation

Open Access•X Power, Luca Sitzia et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 57

Hunter‐gatherer architectural practices are one of the main sources of data to understand the complex land use of these societies. In the hyperarid Atacama Desert coast (Northern Chile), hunter‐gatherers‐fishers developed standardized stone‐built architecture during the Late Archaic period (∼5,700–4,000 cal years BP), interpreted so far as sedentary villages or long‐term campsites. Nevertheless, the lack of site formation process studies and syst…

  • A perched, high-elevation wetland complex in the Atacama Desert (northern Chile) and its implications for past human settlement

Open Access•Luca Sitzia, Eugenia Gayó et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

A previously undocumented type of wetland is described from the Atacama Desert in northern Chile (3000 m above sea level), sustained exclusively by direct precipitation and perched above the regional water table. Geomorphological mapping, pedostratigraphy, geochemistry, and analysis of contemporary vegetation is used to understand wetland formation and dynamics during historical and present time periods. The paleowetland deposits overlie a Miocen…

  • The open-air site of Mirande 2 (Vaïssac, Tarn-et-Garonne)

Open Access•Mathieu Langlais, Sylvain Ducasse et al.•ARTICLE•Paléo•2016

The recently discovered open-air site of Mirande 2 (Vaïssac, Tarn-et Garonne) lies on a gentle incline of the left bank of the Aveyron River approximately 100 metres from the site of Mirande 1 (Nègrepelisse, Tarn-et-Garonne), which was excavated between 1971 and 1976 by R. Guicharnaud. A test-pit carried out during rescue work evaluated the site’s potential, provided important geological data and produced diagnostic archaeological material. The t…
