  • Road Traffic Noise and Annoyance: A Quantification of the Effect of Quiet Side Exposure at Dwellings

Open Access•Yvonne de Kluizenaar, Sabine A Janssen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

Previous studies indicate that residents may benefit from a "quiet side" to their dwellings. The influence of the level of road traffic noise exposure at the least exposed side on road traffic noise annoyance was studied in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Road traffic noise exposure was assessed at the most and least exposed façade (Lden, most and Lden, least respectively) of dwellings for subjects in a population based survey (N = 1,967). It was inves…

  • Community and Human Social Nature Contemporary Society

    Open Access•Henk De Vos, Henk Vos•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•2004

Although community is a core sociological concept, its meaning is often left vague. In this article it is pointed out that it is a social form that has deep connections with human social nature. Human social life and human social history can be seen as unflagging struggles between two contradictory behavioral modes: reciprocity and status competition. Relative to hunter-gatherer societies, present society is a social environment that strongly sed…

  • Reciprocal Altruism Under Conditions of Partner Selection

Open Access•Henk De Vos, Henk Vos et al.•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2001•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 39

This paper is a contribution to solving the problem of whether reciprocal altruism can emerge and maintain itself in a population of selfish individuals. We use an evolutionary game theoretic simulation model (the Social Evolution Model) to investigate the relative fitness of two versions of a reciprocal altruistic trait competing with a defecting trait. One main difference between the Social Evolution Model and most of the models that are known …

  • Reciprocal altruism in human social evolution: The viability of reciprocal altruism with a preference for “old-helping-partners”

Open Access•Henk De Vos, Henk Vos et al.•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•1997

  • The emergence of reciprocal altruism and group-living: An Object-Oriented Simulation Model of Human Social Evolution

  • A Rational-Choice Explanation of Composition Effects in Educational Research

    Open Access•Henk De Vos, Henk Vos•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•1989•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

The study of compositional effects is a central interest of sociologists in the field of educational research. In particular, the positive effect of the average achievement level of classes and ability groups on individual achievements of students has attracted much attention. This article presents a rational-choice theoretical model that (1) explains this compositional effect, (2) explains the differential effect of ability grouping on the achie…
