  • Telehealth-Readiness, Healthcare Access, and Cardiovascular Health in the Deep South

    Open Access•Ruaa Al Juboori, D J P Barker et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

The findings affirm the relevance of the Andersen model for understanding rural health disparities and highlight the importance of investing in both digital infrastructure and healthcare capacity. Expanding telehealth without addressing provider shortages and social determinants may be insufficient. Local policy innovations and community resilience mechanisms may offer scalable models for improving cardiovascular health in disadvantaged areas

  • Sex Differences in birth size and intergenerational effects of intrauterine exposure to Ramadan in Saudi Arabia

    Open Access•Saleh Alwasel, S H Alwasel et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2011

OBJECTIVES: In Europe, boys and girls have different body proportions at birth. We examined newborn babies in Saudi Arabia to determine the sex differences and whether fetal growth differed if the mother was in utero during Ramadan. METHODS: We examined body size at birth among 967 babies (479 boys and 488 girls) born in Unizah, a small city in Saudi Arabia. RESULTS: Large head circumference was the strongest single predictor of male sex. In a si…

  • Constraints on food choices of women in the UK with lower educational attainment

Open Access•M Barker, Marie E Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2008

Objective Women of lower educational attainment have less balanced and varied diets than women of higher educational attainment. The diets of women are vital to the long-term health of their offspring. The present study aimed to identify factors that influence the food choices of women with lower educational attainment and how women could be helped to improve those choices. Design We conducted eight focus group discussions with women of lower edu…

  • The Developmental Origins of Adult Disease

    D J P Barker, David J Barker•ARTICLE•Journal of the American College…•2004

Low birthweight is now known to be associated with increased rates of coronary heart disease and the related disorders stroke, hypertension and non-insulin dependent diabetes. These associations have been extensively replicated in studies in different countries and are not the result of confounding variables. They extend across the normal range of birthweight and depend on lower birthweights in relation to the duration of gestation rather than th…

  • Early growth and coronary heart disease in later life

    Open Access•Johan G Eriksson, T Forsén et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ•2001

Objective: To determine how growth during infancy and childhood modifies the increased risk of coronary heart disease associated with small body size at birth. Design: Longitudinal study. Setting: Helsinki, Finland. Subjects: 4630 men who were born in the Helsinki University Hospital during 1934–44 and who attended child welfare clinics in the city. Each man had on average 18.0 (SD 9.5) measurements of height and weight between birth and age 12 y…

  • In utero programming of chronic disease

    D J P Barker•ARTICLE•Clinical Science•1998

1.Many human fetuses have to adapt to a limited supply of nutrients. In doing so they permanently change their structure and metabolism. 2.These ‘programmed' changes may be the origins of a number of diseases in later life, including coronary heart disease and the related disorders stroke, diabetes and hypertension. 3.This review examines the evidence linking these diseases to fetal undernutrition and provides an overview of previous studies in t…

  • Fetal origins of coronary heart disease

    Open Access•D J P Barker•ARTICLE•BMJ•1995

The fetal origins hypothesis states that fetal undernutrition in middle to late gestation, which leads to disproportionate fetal growth, programmes later coronary heart disease. Animal studies have shown that undernutrition before birth programmes persisting changes in a range of metabolic, physiological, and structural parameters. Studies in humans have shown that men and women whose birth weights were at the lower end of the normal range, who w…

  • Thinness at birth in a northern industrial town

    C M Law, Catherine Law et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1993•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 7

OBJECTIVE--To determine whether babies in an area of Britain with unusually high perinatal mortality have different patterns of fetal growth to those born elsewhere in the country. DESIGN--Measurement of body size in newborn babies. SETTING--Burnley (perinatal mortality in 1988 15.9/1000 total births) and Salisbury (perinatal mortality 10.8/1000 total births), England. SUBJECTS--Subjects comprised 1544 babies born in Burnley, Pendle, and Rossenda…

  • Housing in early life and later mortality

    David Coggon, D J P Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1993•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 10

STUDY OBJECTIVES--The aim was to examine the influence of domestic crowding and household amenities in early life on later mortality from all causes and specifically from stomach cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and rheumatic heart disease. DESIGN--This was a retrospective cohort study of people whose houses had been surveyed in 1936 and whose household size was known from the 1939 census. Subjects were followed through the National…

  • Early growth and abdominal fatness in adult life

    C M Law, Catherine Law et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1992•Citada por: 34•Referencias: 8

STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to determine whether abdominal fatness in adult men is associated with retarded growth in fetal life and infancy. DESIGN--This was a follow up study of (1) men born during 1920-30 whose birthweights and weights at one year were recorded at the time by health visitors; and (2) men born during 1935-43 whose size at birth was measured in detail. The main outcome measure was the ratio of waist circumference to hip girth. …

  • Housing and appendicitis in Anglesey

    David Coggon, D J P Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1991•Referencias: 3

STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to test the hypothesis that provision of household amenities such as domestic hot water systems and bathrooms changed hygiene which thereby triggered the epidemic of appendicitis in Anglesey after the second world war. DESIGN--The study was a cross sectional survey with histories of housing and appendicectomy obtained from Anglesey residents by postal questionnaire. The main outcome measure was reported appendicectomy…

  • Height and mortality in the counties of England and Wales

    Open Access•D J P Barker, Clive Osmond et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1990

Average heights of adults and children in the counties of England and Wales were examined using national samples of people born between 1920 and 1970. Although height increased over this 50-year period the differences between counties persisted. Average height in a county is closely related to its pattern of death rates, which were derived from all deaths during 1968-78. Counties with taller populations have lower mortality from chronic bronchiti…

  • Growth in utero, blood pressure in childhood and adult life, and mortality from cardiovascular disease.

    Open Access•D J P Barker, D J Barker et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ•1989

In national samples of 9921 10 year olds and 3259 adults in Britain systolic blood pressure was inversely related to birth weight. The association was independent of gestational age and may therefore be attributed to reduced fetal growth. This suggests that the intrauterine environment influences blood pressure during adult life. It is further evidence that the geographical differences in average blood pressure and mortality from cardiovascular d…

  • Diet and coronary heart disease in England and Wales during and after the second world war

    D J P Barker, D J Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1986•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

During the second world war there were large changes in consumption of fats, fibre, and sugar in Britain. These changes matched recent recommendations made by the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy (COMA) with the object of reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD). It is widely believed that CHD mortality fell during the war. This paper re-examines CHD mortality among middle-aged people in England and Wales from 1931 to 196…

  • Distribution of Paget's disease in England, Wales and Scotland and a possible relationship with vitamin D deficiency in childhood

    D J P Barker, D J Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1974

Within England, Wales, and Scotland there are regional variations in hospital discharge rates for Paget9s disease (osteitis deformans). Successive cohorts born after the 1880s show a progressive fall in mortality from Paget9s disease. Because of the epidemiological similarity between the disease and rickets it is suggested that vitamin D deficiency in childhood may be a predisposing influence

  • Low Intelligence and Obstetric Complications

    D J P Barker, D J Barker•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1966•Referencias: 4

Investigations into the association between low intelligence and obstetric complications have been inconclusive.Dayton (1930) wrote that "the literature on mental deficiency is replete in its references to difficult labour as an aetiological factor in the production of intelligence defects".But in a retrospective inquiry he found no evidence that abnormal deliveries were associated more frequently with the births of subnormal children.Pasamanick …
