The decolonisation of the Dutch East Indies put the native soldiers of the colonial army (KNIL) in a difficult position. This article explores the effect of the recent decades’ de‐industrialisation on Mediterranean and Surinamese immigrant groups in The Netherlands and posits the question of whether social polarisation is an emerging reality. The authors conclude that the Dutch government was completely unprepared for the influx of immigration that occurred during this time.
