Comparison of Sketch Maps Drawn by Students from Armidale, Australia and Dunedin, New Zealand
Relative Size of Continents on World Sketch Maps
On mental maps, at all scales, there is a tendency to exaggerate the size of the home area. To see whether there was a home continent exaggeration on sketch maps of the world, we used a subset of 438 maps from a world wide study of mental maps of the world. The subsample consisted of 20 maps from each of 22 sites, selected to include locations within each continent and dispersion latitudinally and longitudinally. On each map, the areas of the con…
Images of francophone countries and francophone images of the world
A sample of mental maps of the world drawn by first-year geography students of eight Francophone countries reflects their variations in geography education. In several countries the geography students are unable to place 30 countries on their Sketch maps ofthe world! The Francophone nations are not seen as the most important, for several large and wellknown countries appear more frequently than most Francophone countries on the sketch maps ofthe …

The World Image of Germany
Down under or centre stage? The world images of Australian students
As part of a major international study, 219 first‐year geography students at three Australian universities drew sketch maps of the world. These maps were overwhelmingly Sinocentric in orientation. In terms of content, Australian students tended to include slightly fewer countries than students elsewhere. The level of inclusion of individual countries in the sketch maps was influenced greatly by the area and population of the countries in question…

An Introduction to Behavioural Geography
What is behavioural geography? What are its roots, how can it promote our knowledge of human behaviour and of the environment, and what direction might it take in the future? This book sets out to answer these questions. Behavioural geography is based upon the approach known as behaviouralism, in which explanation for man-environment problems is founded upon the premise that environmental cognition and behaviour are intimately linked, or that the…
