Anger and Quality of Life in Police Special Forces After a Multiple-Day Hostage-Taking Involving Severe Violence
Police special forces (PSF) are deployed in dangerous operational situations that are associated with particular risks to mental health. Frequent training to cope with these extreme situations and selection are intended to mitigate these risks. However, the mental health consequences of critical incidents among PSF are largely unexplored. We hypothesized that following a barricaded subject operation involving hostage-taking and severe violence, d…
The keys to success
The findings indicate that specific personality traits and self-regulation-related resources are associated with performance-related indicators within the PFV context. The integration of quantitative and qualitative results provides exploratory insights relevant for psychological assessment and mental preparation in a high-performance military setting. Given the study design, conclusions regarding prediction or causality are not warranted; future…
Select them well, train them better! Psychological combat readiness in the German army special forces
Introduction Psychological Combat Readiness (PCR) refers to a mindset designed to enhance the mental performance and operational preparedness of military and law enforcement special forces. The concept comprises five core components: Psychological Stability, Hardiness , Functional Work Attitude , Comradeship and Team Orientation (Cohesion) and VUCA competence —characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The first part of …
Cumulative Incidence of Mental Disorders Among German Military Personnel Deployed to Iraq 2015–2018—An Epidemiological Study
Background: There is currently no study examining the mental health consequences of deployed German service members in Iraq. The aim is, therefore, to determine the cumulative incidence and latency period until the first diagnosis of deployment-related mental disorders. We hypothesized a lower rate than for Afghanistan with 2.4%. Methods: All registered N = 1635 German military personnel who were deployed to the mission “Training support continge…
Incidence of mental disorders in soldiers deployed to Afghanistan who have or have not experienced a life-threatening military incident—a quasi-experimental cohort study
Introduction: There is very good international research on deployment-related mental disorders in military personnel. The incidence rates show a very wide range. A new strategy is therefore proposed in order to achieve better standardization and thus better comparability of the studies. In addition to a non-deployed comparison group, we propose to compare deployed soldiers with and without critical military incidents during the deployment. This a…
Impact of life-threatening military incidents during deployments abroad on the relationships between military personnel and their families
Introduction The influence of deployments on family relationships has hardly been investigated. Following a recently proposed new research strategy, military personnel with and without deployment-related life-threatening military incidents during deployment were compared. The hypothesis was that partner and family relationships of military personnel who experienced such an event would deteriorate more. Methods This study included N = 255 military…
Burnout and moral injuries after foreign deployment among medical personnel of the German armed forces
The results indicate that medical service soldiers exhibit mild to moderate burnout symptoms even before deployment. Significant associations between moral injuries and burnout were found in 3 out of 4 MBI subscales (EE, DP, INV). There was a significant association with a stronger moral injury and higher burnout levels, persisting both before and after the study period. Furthermore, our results suggest that personal value orientations might be m…
Association between different dimensions of anger and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in at-risk cardiovascular patients during the Covid-19 pandemic
It can be assumed that anger and its regulation are relevant factors for both cardiac diseases and PTSD. The study results can be used for prevention, rehabilitation and therapeutic measures. However, the impact of inner anger on PTSD is theoretical and based on statistical testing. A confirmatory longitudinal study is needed to substantiate these results
The impact of the pandemic on the perception of stress and danger, and the adjustment of psychiatric and general medical staff of German military hospitals
The presented results must be interpreted while taking the unique situations of German military clinics into account. The supply of protective material was sufficient and there was no dramatic shortage of psychiatric staff during the pandemic. The inpatients were quite often (40%) elective treatments for trauma-related disorders, which could be discontinued in the case of a COVID-19 infection. The results of this study showed good adaptative skil…
Gender Differences in Anger Among Hospital Medical Staff Exposed to Patients with Covid-19
Purpose: Occupational exposure to patients with COVID-19 is a stress factor. The aim of this study was to assess gender differences in anger among medical hospital staff. Methods:N=78 hospital employees with direct or indirect contact to patients with COVID-19 completed State-Trait Inventory-2. Results: Female personnel showed higher scores in the main “trait anger” scale and its subscale “anger temperament,” whereas “anger control-out” was signi…
