Effects of alcohol-related problems on the costs of frequent emergency department use
Introduction Alcohol-related problems increase the probability of frequent emergency department (ED) use. In this study, we compared the direct healthcare expenses incurred during a single visit among frequent and non-frequent ED users and analyzed the impact of alcohol-related issues in healthcare costs arising from ED usage. Methods The study relied on secondary analyses of economic data from a 1:1 matched case–control study with the primary ai…
Cognitive reserve moderates the relationship between childhood maltreatment, objective and subjective cognition, and psychosocial functioning in individuals with first-episode psychosis
The current results indicate that associations between specific CM subtypes, subjective and objective cognition, and psychosocial domains are moderated through CR with greater functioning. Early interventions focused on CR seeking to improve cognitive and psychosocial outcomes, with emphasis on improving subjective cognitive functions would be beneficial for individuals with FEP and CM. Aerobic capacity and mitochondrial function in bipolar disorder
Our preliminary data showed that lower basal oxygen consumption may be linked to greater mitochondrial respiratory capacity, and maximum oxygen uptake during the exercise task was associated with lower basal mitochondrial respiration, suggesting that lower oxygen requirements could be associated with greater mitochondrial capacity. These findings should be replicated in larger samples stratified for manic and depressive states
Brain structural trajectories in youth at familial risk for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder according to development of psychosis spectrum symptoms
BACKGROUND: The evaluation of child and adolescent offspring of patients with schizophrenia (SzO) or bipolar disorder (BpO) may help understand changes taking place in the brain in individuals at heightened risk for disease during a key developmental period. METHODS: One hundred twenty-eight individuals (33 SzO and 46 BpO, considered jointly as 'Familial High Risk' (FHR), and 49 controls) aged 6-17 years underwent clinical, cognitive and neuroima…
